Everyone starts as a junior software developer. Later when you become a senior, you will be come a software engineer. No amount of university will make you a good software engineer, you need experience.

Shane, I was wondering if you could cover Software Tester/QA Analyst as a career? I was surprised to discover the importance of this role in the software development process yet they're not in the spotlight as much as Software Engineers.

Not entirely truthful info, the 2 million available jobs are for a wide wide variety of topics on software, almost all of which are senior and above. 75% of demand in software is for a senior(6-8 years of specialized experience), 15% for mid, 10% for junior. So you have to battle, even with a degree, for a job when entering and thats why it takes both self taught and college educates programmers so long to enter, because theres no demand for junior work. Also picking the salary of a top company in the most expensive areas is a little dishonest. Junior engineers get paid like 20-30$ an hour across the US, mid a little more than that. The job is very stressful. The grind to get a job is brutal.

I really like these technology majors and i’m still deciding which one I like. You should do a Computer Information Systems video in a little more depth. I haven’t really found anyone that explains it well.

I don't think the agism part is too much to worry about. While applying for software engineering jobs about 8mo ago, some of the companies I respect the most were closed off to anyone without 10+ years of general CS experience. Everyone at my current job is on an escalator rather than stairs, my company gives us regular promotions and pay increases. Our most qualified people have found themselves in non-micromanaging leadership positions without aiming for them. It seems easier to me (in terms of the openings I saw) to land a FANG job after a few years of experience than fresh out of college. Of course, if you do have the drive to specialize or aim for a higher position or particular company, go for it, you'll get there.

I've both BA & MA degrees in English, and I work as a teacher. At first, I was excited to work as a teacher because you do something really good for the world, and you have some nice vacations to rest and refresh (Summer vacation, FTW). But then I saw the other side of the work: parents not caring about what their teenagers do at school, disrespect for the teachers, etc...
Now I'm trying to make a career change to software engineering through a boot camp & self-learning, and I hope it goes better for me. I've always loved computers.

I have a degree in electrical engineering, graduating in 1996. In retrospect, I probably should have gone into computer science instead. Hindsight is always 20/20, but considering I spent my entire career in the software industry, the engineering degree per se didn't give me anything that a computer science degree wouldn't have. At the time when I went to university, software engineering was still not quite as obvious as a viable career choice. In my time, doctor, lawyer and engineer were pretty much the triumvirate of best choices. But either way, worked out well for me.
