The media hype and excitement is actually a GOOD thing. This means people are still interested in science and the important question of if we’re alone. The fact that the media still reports on scientific findings is a positive sign that human curiosity is still intact. Mass media has the ability to reach people who wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to science. This could result in inspiring a kid in a small town to go on and make profound discoveries. The point is — anything that makes people curious and gets them talking about science is ALWAYS a good thing. Rolling our eyes and going on about how misinformed people are doesn’t help promote scientific learning. This just succeeds in turning people away in the belief that science is an exclusive club and doesn’t care about outreach.

Many of us would like to be alive when proof of life is discovered and I think that’s why everyone gets excited. Time is precious and fleeting, so any remote chance is important. There’s just so much we don’t know and the universe is the ultimate mystery.
