Great tips!! The last few were big for me... In my 2nd ultra, I was almost in tears at the START line! Training hadn't gone well, I'd gotten a serious niggle weeks before, so taper meant zero running, my vest flasks broke while loading into the car that morning requiring a complete equipment change, and I'd had 10 hours sleep in the last 3 days. What am I DOING here!?!? A half mile in I settled down, and finished. It truly doesn't always get worse. Unless you're truly injured... not in pain, most people hurt, but a true injury... just slow down, maybe walk, eat/ drink something (fueling is directly tied to my mood and effort in a race), and you'll get your second... or twenty second... wind and feel better. Especially for the first long race or two, it's all about finishing and learning along the way.

SO happy to see someone talking about #6. You never see anyone talking about how much a marathon hurts. regardless of if you run a PR time or you walk the entire distance. It's still going to hurt SO bad!!! Great video as always Matt

Most important advice is fueling IMHO. Most average runners doing <10 mile runs don’t understand why fueling is what allows you to go 20-30 miles. You are also spot on that people “over reward” themselves with excessive calories after training runs. It’s not easy to find the equilibrium. Also, best advice, if it’s your first marathon don’t sweat the small stuff. If you finish that first one, you’ve won.

Great video Matt.

Wished I had this vlog before my first marathon! I would just don’t skip those short midweek runs as they are integral to those key workouts. In any event, I found the food intake tip a propos. I’d struggle through a 20 mile run then celebrate that feat with beer & deep dish pizza - and wondered why I wasn’t losing weight.

Fantastic pro tips! I couldn’t have agreed more and you are right - the very first marathon is always going to be one and only. Listening to this vlog reminds me so much of the awesome feeling I had training for, running, and celebrating my first. Thank you Matt!

Great tips, even for a 3rd time marathoner, since my other 2 date back to 2013 and 2014. The next one kind of feels like a first time.

Great video, best marathon tip I ever saw was to have the following strategy. 1st half, don't be an idiot. Second half, don't be a wimp. 😂

In my opinion distance running is 30% physical and 70% mental. Train your body for the effort but more so train your mind to be comfortable suffering.

Great video Matt. I haven’t watched in a while. I have been busy training for my first marathon coming up October 31 in Cincinnati Ohio. I ran a 15 mile training run about a month ago. I texted a friend after and said “I have to quit. I can’t do it.” She got me calmed down and we went over what had happened. Not only had I run out of water at around mile 9 and didn’t find anywhere to get more until around mile 11, I really hadn’t hydrated well the evening before. I think I’ve decided to carry my own fluids along and top off at the drink stations on the route. I know how bad it felt to run out. And once I was behind, I couldn’t catch up. Thank you for the rest of the tips too! I hope I’m prepared.

Great tips!!! You also upped the ante. I didn't think of these for my video (except for the hurting piece 😁😁). Good job. And I have shed tears after pretty much all my races. Sometimes even on camera haha

surprise, surprise I agree with all eleven points for the first marathon. Some of them are valid for pretty much all longer races i did. Some points just disappeared and new points of value came up in later there is always an exception of any rule
There is one marathon i ran, when i did not drink and did not eat anything during the race, yes it is an exception i never did in another marathon, but for what it`s worth, on that day i ran my lifetime pb with a one minute negative split, and as far as i can remember, it was the best race from start to finish i ever had in my life ( and i was trying to drink at the first aid station, but the water was so cold, i could not drink it, and i said to myself, ok i will be all right without this ice cold water....which leads to number 12: Always be willing to adapt and make the best out of every situation during the race)

The Hydration tip is solid. I wish I had known about the gels, but I was not as disciplined then for if and when to take them. Trial and error.

These are all excellent tips. I am still figuring out the nutrition piece. I know everyone is different so I am experimenting with Gatorade and Clif Blox and just trying to find my own groove. Looking forward to my third marathon, The Tucson Marathon, in December! Any tips for pacing a downhill marathon? The last 10K is always the most painful for me!
