How do we achieve this goal?
Employees may be not be following the lead of the supervisor or manager if you see:
• Insincere agreement: they may agree to a task but not follow through
• Passive resistance: they may rebel against your leadership
• Minimal effort: they may not put in effort because you're not motivating enough
How do you as a manager or supervisor achieve this goal? How do you gain respect?
7 Steps for Managers and Supervisors That Earn Respect:
1. Be credible: follow through with what you promise
2. Be trustworthy: tell the truth even if it's tough or uncomfortable
3. Be respectful: treat others how you and they want to be treated
4. Be consistent: consistency brings familiarity, comfort, and a safety net
5. Be supportive: provide resources for your employees
6. Be appreciative: say 'thank you' or provide feedback on their efforts
7. Be humble: encourage team and relate to them; be approachable
Analyze your own efforts that you've already started in gaining respect as a manager or supervisor. Now, think about the other areas you can improve in. Your efforts will not go unnoticed by your staff!
