I think it is important to protect the native language as well, like in Scandinavia although most people know English we still keep our own language for basically everything and official stuff and education. I think for example in Singapore English has taken over as the main langauge in everyday life at the cost of the native languages that are decreasing sadly. 😢

Philippines adopted English but still poorer than Thailand, and so as India adopted to English but still poorer than China. English alone will not makes you becomes a wealthy nation you need more than that and China or Hongkong, Singapore, Japan, south Korea and others had proven that to the world.

English is a hybrid language and has developed in to its status today because it is simply the best language to speak

The same reason more and more foreigners have been going to China to learn Mandarin. Knowing the languages of the #1 & #2 economies in the world will give you more opportunities and competitiveness.

It could also be a geopolitical move to make appear closer to the US and Western values and thus are likely to get support from the American government and people if China were to invade. The US residents and government would hear people pleading for help in a language they also speak.

Learning English within 7 years is not impossible if you are motivated. I learned English within 2-3 years of intensive self-study during high school in Berkeley, California and scored high enough on the SAT to be admitted automatically to UC Berkeley. I also learned Latin and German and explored Esperanto during the same years in high school. The key is motivation, not time.

The main language in Taiwan is Mandarin(Traditional Chinese), and this will never change; the secondary language in Taiwan are usually Taiwanese, Hakka, aboriginal, or the Southeast Asian language of new immigrants. You can freely take these language courses in school; English in Taiwan It is a required course in school, and some schools also require students to choose a second foreign language, such as Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Russian, etc.
