TIPS FOR SOLVING MATH WORD PROBLEMS
Показать описание
This video will provide tips for solving math word problems. Teaching students with special needs is a struggle, especially in Math. Most students need support in Operations and Algebraic Thinking. So, here are some tips for solving math word problems.
especially when solving two-step word problems using the 4 operations. Word problems are quite difficult because they use multi-step, logical strategies. Often these strategies depend on the student’s reading level, which is usually lower than the expected grade level. And, it assumes that the child can understand written information.
Then, as we are delving into word problems, and especially two part word problems, I would like to teach an organizer for the students to use in order to help break down word problems into small pieces of information. The idea of the organizer is to lead them in a set process of being able to understand what to do and how to solve the problems itself.
One way to teach this will be telling them to read the whole problem, and then read it one sentence at a time, adding a graphic source. This source and strategy is crafted using Polya’s methodology: I would like to teach them the four “steps” to solving a problem: understanding, planning, carrying out the plan, looking back.
And, even though these are simple tips for students with ADHD or ADD, they can be used by all children and can even be used with word problems that include multiple steps.
I’m Cynthia Ruth. In this video I will introduce several evidence–based strategies to help your struggling students with math word problems. Also, don’t miss my bonus tips on how to further help your student at the end of this video.
