SUVs can be a mixed bag. Some earn their reputation because satisfied owners genuinely love them and scored great deals, while others gain popularity solely through slick advertising. And then, there are the ones that are popular because they're genuinely excellent.

What's considered 'popular' varies from person to person, and sometimes, it's a marketing ploy to get you to buy. But we've done the research and identified some SUVs you should steer clear of.

We've got alternative options for each of these overhyped SUVs. These alternatives aren't just popular because of flashy ads and low prices – they're reliable and come with low maintenance costs. So, make a wise choice and avoid the SUV pitfalls!"

I drove my 2001 Subaru Forester for 10 years with no issues, then traded it for a 2011 Forester which I am still driving with no issues. Maintain your vehicle!

Mazda CX-5 should have been mentioned as a very reliable alternative to any of these cars.

2015 Subaru Outback with 175, 000 km on it. Routine fluids and filter changes, brake pads, no other issues.

My 2005 Honda CRV is still running very very well. As long as you take care of it maintenance wise, it can last a long time even decades. I still see people driving the 2005 model.

At the first recommendation for a car with a CVT transmission I lost the faith. I've had 3 cars with CVT and what I can say is that they actually get better gas mileage but the reliability is far from acceptable, and the acceleration is way worse than a sequential transmission, they're also more delicate and don't like you to tow. I have a hard time trying to understand why reputable brands like Subaru and Honda keep forcing CVTs into their cars. There's nothing like a good sequential transmission, if possible I'd also avoid DCT, they're quick but its increased complexity make them more expensive to maintain. Nowadays the factors I look when planning to get a new car are NOT having a CVT, it must have Apple Carplay and Adaptive Cruise Control, no less than 7 airbags, and a good evaluation in Euroncap and/or IIHS. Even the gas consumption can be greatly improved if you drive consciously.
The other trend that I really don't like is putting the climate settings in the screen without physical buttons, I understand it's for lowering costs but it's so annoying, and using capacitive buttons as well. So, dear car manufacturers, please consider that forcing the driver to take her/his eyes off the road to be able to point to the right button drawing on a screen is way more dangerous than not having emergency autobrakes.

I just bought a Toyota RAv4, but my wait time is 4 to 6 months. I will wait as I have not heard anything negative about this choice. I currently own a Nissan Rouge and it’s been a money pit!! Problem after problem! Don’t buy this vehicle, period! I’m so happy to see a review that addresses the transmission issue. I wish I would have purchased a RAV4 sooner, but anything good is worth the wait.

Why any engineer would put a 3 cylinder engine in a vehicle that is going to be used on the highway is beyond me, this is the death of the Rogue

I purchased a 2023 Rouge with under 1, 500 miles on it. I’ve only had it 6 months & now in the process of trading it in. I’m having way too many issues. I’m disappointed. However, my previous Altimas served me well.

I had a RAV4, then a Tiguan and I'm back in the market and almost surely going to get a RAV4. The RAV4 is so much better than the Tiguan. I'd take my old 2007 RAV4 over my 2017 Tiguan any day.

Traded my old Lexus rx330 on a Honda hrv, dumped it in under a year, horrible transmission. Traded that on a crosstrek, the ‘safety’ features took time to disable and now it is just an expensive average car. The safety braking would lock them up too far from another car and I nearly got rear ended. The lane keep sees the asphalt patches in the sun as a line and hurls me into another car’s lane. Add to that the crummy gas mileage of 24 hwy and I can’t say this is a car worth buying.

I recommend the 2023 Mazda CX 30. Luxury quality for affordable price, love it!

You left out the best subcompact on the market. The 2023 Mazda cx30 with preferred package . Has everything you could want . Good gas mileage, duel climate control, radar cruise control, blind spot warning. Lane assist, and a 2.5 liter 191 horsepower engine that leaves everything else you mentioned in the dust. Has soft plush dash with leatherette seats, and none of this plastic interior that come on some other models. Power driver side seat, Power auto down and up windows. Rear camera. Automatic front braking. Starts at around 29, 000 with the preferred package model. Should have done your homework. It’s the best sub compact on the road today

I've had two Rogues, One died at 206, 000 Miles. Replaced it in 2016 and that one now has 169, 000 miles; just bought a 2023 YE clearance. Had ZERO issues with transmission

I've found all CVT transmissions not lasting much over 100, 000 miles by just googling individual cars of this type. The RAV4 and Mazda series are the only ones left that don't use CVT. The Rav4 is marked up and you'll probably have to wait for a new one. The CX30 has space issues especially in the rear leg room area. The CX5 and CX50 seem like they would be a better alternative for an SUV starting under 30k.

Mazda cx5 would be great alternative for any of the less desirables especially the escape. I test drive both and the mazda was simply the best all the way around. Its right up there with toy, hond and sub.

I have had a 2020 and now 2024 Ford escape. Zero problems and I get 32 miles to the gallon on the highway. I haven’t had any of the issues that have been listed in the video. A very reliable car in my opinion.

Should really check out the Acura RDX. I have two Acura’s 2002 TL has 278, 000 miles and still going strong, and 2011 MDX with 184, 000 miles. Both have been great vehicles.

I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue SV, and it’s been really reliable so far. I bought it in 2018 and thankfully I only commute to work 3 times a week, so I don’t have a ton of miles on it. It’s around 83, 000 right now and I bought it with 30, 000 miles. I pretty much only drive it on Eco mode to save on gas and it still has pretty good rev to get up and go. Really great car. I’ve been debating upgrading my car and looked at the new rogues, but I haven’t really been impressed with the new body style and the interior pretty much hasn’t changed at all. I think I’ll keep my old rogue for a little while longer.
