Should I Take Calculus 3 Before Differential Equations?

This is a question I often get and so in this video I answer it. What do you think? Do you think it's better to take Calculus 3 before Differential Equations?

Please leave any comments or questions in the comment section below. Thank you:)

I would agree totally. The only thing I would add is that it would be great to throw in some linear algebra. A knowledge of linear algebra, although maybe not absolutely necessary, really helps.

I think I will because I took calc 2 during the summer so I'm not that good at integration. I basically can't do trig substitution.

I'd say to take calc 3 before diff eq though they don't really overlap other than slightly with partial derivatives

I took DiffEQ after Calc III. I took Calc III with Linear Algebra, though. But this was 36 years ago.

Where exactly do you teach. I see some of your classroom video and it looks like you are a fun teacher. I like your approach you don't seetto try to go over the students' heads.

If your school has a class with Differential Equations and Linear Algebra in it, like the school I went to, then that would be a totally different argument. I would say I’d prefer calculus 3 before a class like that, but if you’re talking about just DE, then I don’t think you would have to take calc 3 before it.

Gilbert Strang is of the opinión that you do not need to know so much to start doing DE.

Differential equations are more physics than math, so yes you can do it not doing calc 3, that its quite flexible course and can change the issues inside

I took intro to ODEs after C3 & LA. C3 was a lot easier for me than both C2 & DE. I honestly don’t remember anything from LA (bad textbook, bad homework app, and bad teacher). I actually learned all of the LA I needed for DEs in C3. 🤷‍♀️ C3 was definitely my favorite class. And even after DE, I am very slow at integrating. But, I’m old - almost 50 (I went back to college for a Math BA in my 40s)

I took calc 2 last spring and plan on taking DE during the summer or in the fall. I feel like I'm generally okay with integrating except that there might be some integration techniques that i need to go back and brush up on. Would you say there's anything from Calc 2 you'd recommend i go back and review that will really help when i take DE. currently, for this semester, im taking linear algebra and physics, and im doing fairly okay with them.

When I study multivariable calculus, I find difficulties with cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Are there any books or methods to become more fluent or proficient in dealing with them?

Both at same time. They are very complimentary courses.

I just don't care about vector calculus, but I do want to study differential equations

I took calc 3 before Diff EQ. Just rip the dam bandage off and get the pain over with.

Amm I'm kinda afraid of . Me not remembering all the formulas and steps. So . The question is. Should you understand the concepts or memorize everything .. to actually take more advanced stuff

Im not that good at integration but really good at derivates (calc1), do you suggest me take calculs 3 or diffreional first ?

I dont remember anything of calc 2 because i took them years ago. My school allows me to choose between calc 3 or DE. Which one would you recommend to take for someone with no math knowledge?

Personally DEQs is easy compared to calculus 3, DEQ is more streamlined
