I understand splitting the head in half, the thirds are confusing. How do you know where the thirds go, are you eye balling the thirds and place them where you think they are divided even into 3 parts? Same with the 1/5 how do you know where to make each mark?

I think the point of dividing segments into equals such a halfs or thirds is for us to gauge exactly where a feature lies within that range. Having equals makes the guess work easier. So, the method provided in the video does give you a way to draw a portrait it does miss the point of having these proportions in the first place. Proportions aren’t a template(it can certainly be depending on the type of art you wish to make) but a guide for us to follow to place our features accurately. Following this would certainly give you a symmetric-ish sketch however, if you are trying to sketch a portrait from a reference or still life where the features are generally not very symmetrical or there is a variation in the pose of the subject, understanding how to make use of these proportions is crucial.
