What If The Soviets Joined The Axis? | Alternate History

Germany and the Soviet Union are remembered today as fierce ideological enemies during and in the build up to WW2, even despite their establishing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Non-Aggression pact, with allowed them to simultaneously invade Poland, and initiate World War Two, however, what is sometimes forgotten is that the German-Soviet Non Aggression Pact nearly led to a much closer alliance, one which would have seen the USSR made into a full member of the Axis Powers. So in today's video we ask What if the Soviets joined the Axis Powers?

I had a fun time working on this video! I think it turned out great!

I don't get the point about Germany not annexing Alsace-Lorraine. Creating the state that encompasses all ethnic Germans was one of Hitler's main goals.

"the Germans likely would not annex Alsace-Lorraine"
Alsace-Lorraine: is annexed on map

Interesting scenario! Things I would change:

-I disagree that Germany wouldn't annex Alsace-Lorraine. Uniting all German speaking lands was one of the most important things to the Nazi government, and the main reason they started the war. I feel like it makes little sense for Germany to demand back Cameroon from France but not the actual German part of France. Luxembourg and parts of eastern Belgium, which are German, would also be annexed. No point in setting up a Luxembourgish puppet state.

-Iraq would retake Kuwait from the British, Hungary would retake Vojvodina from Yugoslavia, Italy would take Egypt and Sudan to control the Suez and link Libya with their East African colonies.

-While it's plausible for Germany to occupy Britain after their surrender I see it as even less likely for them to occupy the US. It would also make less sense for the US to surrender then. If the US surrenders conditionally, the most important of those conditions would be to maintain their independence. It would also be beneficial for the Axis not to have to occupy the US, could you imagine the kind of organized resistance a large armed population like the Americans would be able to put up?

-Germany would not annex Slovakia and the entirety of Poland, they set up puppet states of both.

Nazi Germany and Soviet Union had so conflicting long term goals that I can't really see their alliance lasting an entire World War. This would've fallen apart quickly IMO. Stalin was too much of a paranoic to let someone like Hitler grow so strong, while Hitler saw full German economic independence as essential and it would have been very difficult to achieve without conquering parts of the Soviet Union such as fertile farmlands of Ukraine, as Germany struggled with their agricultural output during that time period.

I gotta say. Usually you hit the accuracy dead on, but I think your guest just took the script in an unrealistic direction.

It would be cool to see a "What if Italy joined Britain in WW2?"

Berlin-Moscow Axis (noun) (21st century idiom) - Two crazy people are in a relationship with each other; an unHoly alliance that makes people terrified, scared, and/or confused

I would imagine the United States' history of resentment towards occupation (AKA British Occupation) would result in a guerrilla resistance movement in territories occupied by Germany and Japan. Austin might become the new United States capital and the unoccupied areas might focus on themselves, or support the resistance on the coasts, perhaps even declaring a Second Revolutionary War and directly fighting the occupying forces in an attempt to reclaim the coasts. A full scale war might not happen right away, but a resistance would likely form early on.

Pretty sure Stalin wanted to invade western Europe as much as the III Reich wanted the east "lebensraum". So the alliance would most likely last 4-5 years max I think. But theorising is always fun,

What a meme, japan has impenetrable anti-air to the point where they stop a 200 mile air mission. But the US can't defend against an impossibly insane nuclear attack from Paris to NY lmao

Japans price has always been China and not India. They would focus all their strength to subjugate China like they did in our timeline with their South east asian resources.

I love how a country that surrendered in 6 weeks is considered one of "Big Seven" while China is referred to as a "smaller player", despite having fought in one of the bloodiest theatres in the war, for 8 years.

Yeah I can certainly see a few issues here in this theory as it basically relies on everything going absolutely perfectly for the Axis with little if any allied intervention. Operation sea lion? Same issues here as with real world. Germany didn’t just abandon it because they were gearing up for Barbarossa, but also because they would have been slaughtered in the channel by what would still have been the biggest, baddest kid on the the waves. The Mediterranean would still remain largely the same, having Russia meddle around a bit and relieving stress on the resource crunch maybe makes the Italians more willing to sortie but again you are dealing with the British fleet and soon to be American fleet, so chances of North Africa remaining an Axis holding doesn’t seem too feasible to me. Without strong axis forces on both ends of the Middle East means that theatre becomes really messy and possibly throws the whole scenario out the window. And that leads us to the pacific theater and well, being honest, the Japanese would never have been able to contest with American domination of the sea even if everything went perfectly for them, secured resources in SE/Asia, and from soviet Siberia doesn’t change the fact that eventually the US navy will cripple the Japanese during their engagements and this spells the end of Japan as an empire, as it’s rather hard to project power across the sea without a navy to do it with, from that point it’s simply a matter of isolating and destroying Japanese occupied islands like in our time and with their control over the waves in jeopardy so too would their industry. Plus in regards to Russian resources you gotta get them across Siberia first and it’s even more of a mess to do because most of their industry would still be in western Russia, at least in our timeline Russian factories were rebuilt east of the Ural Mountains, here Russia’s industry is never under threat so there’s no reason to move out east at all anyways. Then there’s the whole Atom bomb situation, and while yes, Germany did have an atomic program, it was definitely not high on the priority list and was even regarded as “Jew science.” So I find it a bit remarkable that they not only get the bomb first but also have much more powerful ones than the only nation that never had to deal with its factories being bombed to bits at night. Seems like a lot in this theory has to be stretched to the breaking point in believability to work. The only thing I can see happening with a theoretical addition of the Soviets to the axis forces is that the war becomes more prolonged and bloody for the western Allies as a whole and maybe a lot less Soviet deaths as the main theaters of war for the western Allies were pretty well outside the realm of soviet influence. All of this to say, would Axis Russia really be committed to waging war on Germany’s behalf? Japans?

I somehow doubt that the lower 48 would be occupied in any way. As Isoroku Yamamoto put it, "There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass".

The alliance wouldn't work at all. The Soviets would gain nothing out of the deal and Germany would only fortify Western Europe against the East. In our timeline the Soviets did the most brilliant strategic move in history: they were the only country after world war 2 that expanded, and the weakened divided Europe planted the seeds for the collapse of the British and French Empires, creating a lot of nations who would be looking for partnership to fight their colonial powers. Conveniently the USSR had already created the KGB to direct such operations. In this alternative world, the soviets would just gain a bunch of snow land.
