Why Standing Makes You More Influential

If you want to be more influential, don't be afraid to stand up!

Standing up immediately makes you stand out if everyone else is sitting down.

Use the tactics I share in this video if you're in a work culture where standing isn't the norm.

A simple phrase like "Is it okay if I stand up I've been sitting all day" will do the trick to help you feel more comfortable with standing up.

And remember this makes you waay more influential than if you were just sitting down and talking in a meeting.

I read about this concept while I was self studying after being moved to a training position at work for the first time. And I’ve definitely seen the positive effects of this!

I’m on the short side, as well as being younger then most of my coworkers (and being a woman in a very male dominated industry, but that’s thankfully not really impactful here unless it’s someone brand new) so I spend a lot of time and energy on proving my capabilities and understanding, despite the fact that I’m the longest standing employee in our Ops team (6 years running!) and have worked in every department we have in the warehouse, even being a pivotal part in building most of them.

So when I am conducting a training, I stand at the front of the room despite my intense chronic anxiety, and it really makes the difference when trying to hold everyone’s attention. And, it gives me a much better view to watch my audience to gauge reactions, so I can adjust my approach accordingly.

I’ve also intentionally developed a habit of standing to one side of the screen when doing power point slides, because I need them to *hear* me, but *see* the screen. And when I’m trying to REALLY emphasize a point, or give significant weight to what I’m saying, I shift my stance to be in the center, a step (not too close) towards the group, and make a point to look people in the eyes when speaking.

Again, as someone with anxiety (and also being neurodivergent) this can be a challenging and even stressful habit to form. But the payoff is so worth it! I’ve found that not only do I get treated with more credibility, but people also seem to retain the pertinent information much easier (I think in part because I’m indicating via body language what matters most, so they’re not just overwhelmed with too many details at once)

not only because of that, making people feel sympathetic towards you, while stating something that other people may also be feeling, such as the sore on the back, make people connect with you even faster, which helps you influence them even more

Picture someone doing something heroic. Now, was he sitting or standing?

Oh, what if the others say, "Oh, sure let's all stand up and loosen up a bit, you don't mind, do you?" 😊

We do trainings with our new team members outside under a pavilion. We all sit down on the picnic tables. I love the round table style of discussion but i have noticed… there is a difference when as the leader I sit on the picnic table top as I speak instead of sitting down with the rest. Its subtle but yes, it works.
