ElectroBOOM and LTT did a collab a while back there they shocked PC components with an ESD device and as far as I can remember nothing broke, it only disturbed the functionality in the exact moment of the impact.

I swear those older pre 2017 or 2015 videos had us telling to always put those bracelets

All those protections are relatively new. Way way way back in the day you could actually do some real damage to circuits with static. The habit just kinda stuck even after the circuits permanently resolved the issue. Kinda like Airplane mode never needing to be a thing, but will be forever.

I live in a state where it is extremely dry in the winter, static builds up easily, while I was putting my panels on I watched static electricity arc to panels multiple times, its always better to be safer because it can blow a motherboard, doesnt mean it will

I don't use a strap, but I will occasionally make sure I do discharge any static just cause I'm also a Hospital Electronics Tech and it has sorta been drilled into me over 26 years in the biz. Probably not necessary any more, but it's like muscle memory sorta. :)

Electricity? My PC Uses Diesel To Run💀

Linus and electroboom together proofed how hard it actually is to kill computer parts with static

Same, I mean I wore antistatic strips when I was working in stores because it was a requirement, but Ive built computers for over 30 years and have not lost a single component to static electricity. I do keep open parts in their antistatic bags though and I will never place a component down on bare carpet.

Even though I'm living in warm and humid enviroment, my casualty so far is two sticks of laptop RAM. Since then, that grounding bracelet is a must for me, even just for cleaning...

It was a genuine concern 20-30 years ago, not so much now. Just dont do anything thats gonna make you build static electricity. It still can mess stuff up, but its not as big of a problem anymore

That static thing was from old old old days back when computers are on cathode tube era, back then static can cause cathode tube on the memory circuitry be off syncs with other parts, so people were used to suggest to use those bracelets. They were not an issue anymore after introducing bios.

Having worked in PCB manufacturing and board testing using an ATE for a couple of weeks, EST get's taken seriously: Antistatic S3 boots + Straps (including the ones that go in your socks and go around your boots).

When building, upgrading or regular maintenance, I always make sure I'm discharged.

When relaying my flooring I shielded all of it and grounded it.

In repairing electronics (modems, TV's, etc.) I've found out if it doesn't cause a problem that minute, it could cause a failure to happen in the future. That's why repaired electronics have a limited warranty.

I take this to heart and always ground myself when building computers. Why potentially damage a computer build when just using the ESD wrist strap can stop that from happening? Small chance of lowering the life of a component is not NO CHANCE.

I only had issue with static electricity once, but it was kind of a big deal back then. So, I was a broke student and I owned SteelSeries 6gv2 keyboard. It was a good and pretty expensive for me. One day I got insanely tired grinding StarCraft2 ladder, so I went to sleep. Sadly, I was wearing wool sweater and layed right on top of wool blanket. Obviously right after I woke up I decided to game and got shocked by electricity the moment I touched my dear keyboard. Static electricity didn't hurt that much, but my basically died instantly. Pressing it's buttons would do random things, like you press W, but it types U, etc. I had to buy another 6gv2 that day. :(

It's just one of those things that it's better to be safe than sorry. Even if there's a lot of protection in a lot of parts, stuff like RAM is the most susceptible to being damaged by static discharge. That said, you just need to make contact with the computer case itself once in a while and you'll be fine. The Antistatic band is just for convenience so you can have your hands free.

LTT does recommend using those anti-static bracelets.

COMPTIA (A+ cert) says all you need to do to neutralize a shock is touch the metal part of the case before touching components. At least that's what I was taught back in 2011.

Touching the metallic frame fo the case is enough to discharge any static and when you build a pc you usually touch that a lot, so nothing to worry about.
