They never claimed the band wouldn't exist without one of them. They fired Joey because he wouldn't communicate with the band. They were a year behind. Joey told their management he didnt want to record a new Slipknot album. Instead he wanted to do a 2nd Scar the Martyr album, which would have put Slipknot behind another year. No communication, plus his decline in playing is what led to his release. Jim did a whole interview about it. Joey also didnt tell any of them about his disease, which made them think his appearance and decline in playing was drug and alcohol related.
