Is it Lung Cancer? (signs and symptoms)

Could it be lung cancer? What are the symptoms of lung cancer? This video is for those who are scared they may have lung cancer. This health scare is very common and you need to see your doctor for accurate information because internet searches may lead you to become scared and self-diagnose incorrectly, or have a false sense of reassurance.

Your mind is not objective and can be influenced by emotions, leading to unconscious bias. You may find arguments to support what you already think (even if irrational). Be aware that the mind can play tricks on you.

Lung cancer facts:

Who gets it?
Normally older individuals, who smoked for many years (20+) and maybe worked with carcinogens / had environmental exposures. It is rare in non-smokers and young people.

Symptoms of lung cancer?
Often there can be no symptoms (incidental finding on x-ray/CT). Other times there may be an ongoing cough, coughing up blood, weight loss, repeated episodes of pneumonia in the same area of the lung. Chest pain is actually quite rare at the beginning (unless the tumor affects pleura). Other health events may also occur (unprovoked blood clot, abnormal electrolyte levels etc.)

How is lung cancer diagnosed?
It's important to first see your doctor to assess the the risk in your case. An initial chest x-ray may be performed. In people who have a high risk (heavy smokers, older individuals), a low dose chest CT scan to screen for lung cancer may be done. If a suspicious nodule or spot on your lung is found, it may be initially just monitored with repeat CT (Is it growing?). Other tests may also be requested depending on the case (i.e. PET scan, bronchoscopy, etc.)

If you are worried about your health, please go see your doctor.

My son is 31, a non smoker, and was diagnosed with stage 4 Lung cancer last July, it had already spread to his liver and spine. He has battled through some agonising treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, but sadly all treatments are now exhausted and the tumour on the liver is growing rapidly. I came across this article as I find it helps to reach out to people who have gone or are going through similar, i find this extremely interesting as my son has been a garage mechanic for the last 12 years. As an avid gym goer 5/6 days a week, the cancer only presented itself as a cough, by then it was too late, as it was an aggressive cancer that had already spread, he’s now on end of life care, it’s heartbreaking knowing his time is now limited, so yes, it is rare for it to happen to the younger ones but it does happen

As a veteran we are truly screwed. The V.A. thinks everything is just your allergies and PTSD. They refuse to test for cancer until it's confirmed by accident while testing for something else. Since it is a teaching hospital it's like they want you to be at stage 4 to give students (residents) something to do.

My dad’s was in his pleural it was very painful up into his shoulder. He was a non smoker but worked his entire life as a diesel mechanic and they believe it was his exposures that caused this. He was stage 4 when diagnosed. Lived 8 months once given the news. I miss him so much.

I do know mind can play tricks on you. Friend passed away from cancer and I had this idea that pain my back was cancer. I went to my doctor told him about it wanted my liver scanned because I had been previously diagnosed with fatter liver. I went had an ultrasound and same diagnoses fatter liver the same day I got the results the back pain went away in that area. I figured out it was in my mind based on fear of cancer. We have to get over the fear of death and accept that it will be all our fate don't waste life minutes on fear. Nothing wrong with getting something checked out.

Thank You Dr. Stanel for this very informative video. I wake up in middle of the night and it was painful to breath on the left side of my back. I am a smoker for 50+ years. After about an hour it seemed to get less painful so I will lay back down and see what happenes. Again, TY !!!

Good advices ! I am diagnosed with stage 4 Lung cancer, non-small cells. I was in denial for a while because I am a nonsmoker, healthy. I am now in the mid of chemo and immunotherapy. I am now advanced to think about how people die from LC (in specific) rather than how I got here.

My father passed away from Lung Cancer on Memorial day 2021. Went from 6 months to a week after diagnosed, it's definitely one of the hardest situations any family could go through. Personally, what helped with coping after was realizing that it takes a lot of time to heal from a loved one passing of lung cancer. Dont be afraid to ask for help also from a therapist, friend or even a neighbor. For 2 years I avoided the trauma and it only got worse from there, you're never in this alone!

I had a tumour in my upper left lobe of lung that grew through my shoulder up into the the C2 vertebrae of spine. I worked 12 hours 5 days a week in deep sea crabbing and then a year of tree arborist so I consider that hard work. No shortness of breath ( 2 min 11 sec breath hold underwater ) fit and healthy but putting on weight. Lots of night sweats.
Only found out about tumour because my elbow hurt a lot. CT MRI scans and doc gives me the bad news, Non Hodgkin's lymphoma, so not lung cancer just cancer in the lung.
6 administrations of chemo over 18 weeks and I'm fixed. 2 years in remission so far.
And in Australia I didn't even have to pay any money at all for any of the treatments and medications and in Australia we don't even need insurance, just have to be born in the best country in the WORLD. Living the dream

I appreciate the words of caution about getting medical advice via the internet. So true. But I think a fair number of us are following up the brief talks we’ve had with our doctors. For me, my nodule and granulomas were found unexpectedly while being screened for surgery clearance. Now I’m being scheduled for a PET scan and that has me worried. None of the symptoms you mention, but I am in my seventies, so maybe my age is the reason for the PET scan.
