It's fair to ask: which of the 3 Yellowstone shows has been your favorite? Yellowstone, 1923 or 1883?

I noticed that in 1923 E4, while Alexandra was reading the letters to Spencer that cara( think I spelled it correctly) wrote that a baby had died and John stayed by her side, she’s too old to try again. It doesn’t mention a name but it could explain some of the names on the headstones.

Helen Mirren who plays Cara, has already said in an interview that they never had children. I'm also sure, it was mentioned in the first episode too, that they had no children.

Need a family tree for the Rainwaters, too. Start with the Chief from 1883.

I’m watching 1923 now. I usually don’t like western shows but I really enjoyed yellow stone and 1883

There was a John Dutton that was in the program when Rip was younger. He was real good. Fit the part well. They need him back.

1883 had some of the best acting by Sam Elliot. You can tell this script and story spoke to the actors. It is also one of the most accurate cinematic portrayals we have seen about the Oregon Trail.

I missed the first 3 seasons of Yellowstone so it's hard to say about that one. I absolutely love both 1883 as well as 1923 and rewatch them often. I just wish they would get going with the rest of 1923.

Jack said to his Elizabeth that Cara never had any children when Elizabeth felt useless after losing the baby.

I know the whole point of 1883 (great show) was to show the origin and hardship of heading west. I just hated what happened to Elsa. I would have loved a second season of that era.

remember, after the 7th generation the Dutton property is supposed to revert back to the indian tribe. we'll see how that plays out, maybe.

I can totally buy everything Billy. Well done. I never thought of Mary Abel as having Abel as her last name. But that settles one of the two biggest arguments about all this. I still have an issue that Claire has the last name of Dutton. Most widows back then wouldn't have dropped their husbands last name when he died. But as you say, they're all dead so it doesn't matter. I even like your explanation of Jacobs boys' tombstones. If Spencer has a kid, that's a death sentence based on Elsa's soliloquy. A+

All. 1923 is a diversion from cattle and horses and wonderful scenery of Africa…and Spencer!!

1883 was the best of the lot. Yellowstone drags from season to season deeper and depper into silliness. 1923 moves to slow although there is lots of potential Hope they have more seasons. But 1883 is brilliant. Elsa is the best character in the entire franchise

hands down, 1883. it has the deepest emotional tugs. The beginning origins. And, well - Tug Macraw.

I just wanted to point out (not having read all the comments below to know if it's been said already) that Jack is also a nick-name for John (think "Jack"/John F Kennedy as an example). So.. it is plausible that Jack is actually the father of John (Kevin Costner). At least in theory. Of course that is me ignoring any other answers we've tripped across about which generation the Kevin Costner (John) actually may or may not be.

If you think about that.. since it's 1923.. it is also plausible from a timeframe stand point. The Kevin C. character is the right age that he could've been a later born child of Jack. He'd have to have been born around 1955 or so. This would put Jack in his mid to late 50's at the time of John Dutton III birth. Since we do not actually know John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) birthdate or age. This tracks as well since Spencer was not born to James Dutton until after 1883's timeframe. Slightly later in life.

It would be great if they went back even further to the Scottish Highlands and Ireland.

Man, I wish it made sense for Spencer to be John Dutton III's grandfather. I mean there are some ways they can work around it maybe but I just want it to be true. Lol
