I hope your channel grows, we need more proxmox videos and self-hosted stuff, I usually use a platform where I don't have to see ads but I popped back on so I could actually leave you a comment, and thank you for your hard work and making these videos for us.

Been using Proxmox for a few months now and loving it. I have Windows 10 and 11 and also a few Linux distros and a few MacOS running on it. Using dual monitors with two GPUs and able to dual boot two of them at the same time. Also using share mouse to use one keyboard/mouse between the two is awesome.

Thanks for the video. You have left out a lot details that are required to get all to work.

I am an IT consultant for hundreds of researchers and it has been my experience that windows doesn't just start boot looping randomly. this can happen when the os updates and there's a hardware problem that prevents data from being written properly, this can happen when there are corrupt drivers or system files, and this can happen if there is a memory or pcie problem with the machine. often boot loop problems can be resolved by going into recovery mode and doing a system file check (sfc/scannow) and failing that using dism to cleanup the image which will download known good copies of any corrupt system files. further, running a good ram test like memtest86 may also be advised. Sometimes video drivers are the issue in which case you can solve that by using display driver uninstaller which completely removes every part of nvidia, amd, and intel device drivers allowing you to reinstall the latest versions for your hardware from their respective sites. I am NOT a windows shill by any means, but lots of people run windows for primary workstation use because of how popular the platform is and thus the availability of software available for it. fwiw, I personally use a combination of windows linux (ubuntu on my notebook, truenas scale on my nas, proxmox on my virtualization cluster, and debian for most of my service vm's), and BSD (I run pfsense on my router).

My old proxmox machine died giving me a perfect reason to finally getting around to upgrading. Grabbed an Epyc cpu/mem/mobo combo for it and am still figuring out exactly how I want to set everything up (like you moving my main desktop to linux). Think I'm going to grab a low power mini PC for windows instead of running it in a VM and I'm going to test out virtualizing Truenas (which I might not stick with, we will see), home assistant along with whatever else I end up running. Still have some hardware to grab before I'm ready to do everything but it's always fun seeing what other people are doing.

definitely following. Curious to see how you manage and switch between (or use simultaneously) the Win/Linux VM(s). I have a 5950x as a daily driver to and it is overkill for most things I do, so definitely interested in seeing how I could split that resource.

To say that Windows 11 is a steaming pile of .... is a big understatement. I allowed it to be installed on one of my machine that I use for only certain functions. It was more than the two week that windows allows you to revert back before I got back to using the machine. The absolute stupid things that they keep doing to it, is mind blowing. I will re-install Win10 when I have the time. MS sure still follows their standard in that every other version of the OS is a bomb (bad). Have been using Proxmox for several years now and a great product. I run several linux VMs and containers and created my first Win10 VM this year. I still reply on some software that are only windows/apple based and there is no Linux based software that can do their job. Every so often, I do look new or improved Linus based apps, but still lack the features that I need. I have people telling me that X and Y are great and better replacement for A & B. The I ask them how do I do this and that. I don't do basic editing. Just my little rant.

Hi

A few notifications.
At 5:26 it seems odd that you ve chosen megaraid since scsi works the same or even better and it is more universal.
At 5:31 as a bus type it would be better to choosescsi again and not IDE.
At 5:43 you dont have to explicit check the aes-ni since you ve chosen host as a cpu type. This will pass all the abilities of the cpu to the VM.
At 11:28 do you know the difference between raw na mapped device?
Also no need to place all those extra arguments on certain config files like
-nano /etc/kernel/cmdline -> root=ZFS=rpool/ROOT/pve-1 boot=zfs intel_iommu=on pcie_acs_override=downstream, multifunction
-nano /etc/default/grub -> intel_iommu=on pcie_acs_override=downstream, multifunction"
boot=zfs intel_iommu=on pcie_acs_override=downstream, multifunction"
-nano /etc/modules -> vfio
vfio_iommu_type1
vfio_pci
vfio_virqfd
any more? Does Prox takes care of that and does that automatically when you select a pci -e device to pass through?

Finally I noticed that you ticked the rom-bar of the GPU but not providing a rom for the gpu.

PS You omit to show the installation of guest agent with virtio drivers after installation / restoration of Win (probably there are already installed ok)

You read my mind man, I have been playing around with my sworsktation installing and trying out different distros in the end I just decided to go with Proxmox and spin up whatever I need at that moment even if it incurs a slight performance penalty.

Great video! It looks like PCIe passthrough has changed some in Promox 8! I'll need to see about upgrading my cluster soon. Virtualization is the way to go! You have a ton more flexibility for a machine when you can spin up VMs as you need. Having the ability to backup/restore your machine is also a huge plus. I virtualize Windows 11 for gaming with my 4090/EPYC build and stream the screen over Parsec. Latency is decent for the most part.

Can you explain the part how you boot into windows on the other computer at the end?

John-mlpr

Do You need 2 GPUs to do this? Jeff from Craft computing mentioned that You still need one gpu for proxmox interface.

yeah windows can be buggy sometimes i use to run it on bare metal but once i got in to unRAID i switched everything over to vm's it tuke a little bit to figure out things like passthrough and getting everything to work but once done' it has ben working great for 3+ years now only issue is sometimes when i use the on board sound it will make hiss or shuddering in the sound for a few moments but only when the computer is running things in the back ground that are high cpu like when i run duplicati backups or other things at the same time but i found if i just use a pci-e sound card and pass it though or a usb sound adapter then everything works fine i thought i would mention it in case anyone is having trouble with it' anyways thank you for sharing the video with us have a wonderful weekend!💖👍😎JP

Interesting video, I'm very new to Proxmox and trying to understand the GPU passthrough. Having setup iommu i'm still uncertain as to how you connected your Windows VM to the monitor ?
