I was born in the early 80s in the rural Southern US. My town had a similar number of black and white people, and kids of different races played together all through school. We had integrated friend groups in high school as well and generally all cared about each other. Never talked about race except to laugh at cultural differences.

It was more unusual to be gay or trans, and there were more jokes about it than now, but I never met ANYONE who would have bullied or been mean to anyone gay or trans. I remember my cousin’s wife brought her brother, who was obviously gay, to my grandparents’ farm house. Afterward, when asked what he thought of him, my grandfather answered pleasantly, “ Seems like a nice little feller.”

It’s not that I never encountered issues related to race or s*x. I would guess most people went to church, and I’m sure that caused gay kids to have conflicting feelings. There were race related items discussed in local government. But for the most part, we just felt people could do what they wanted, and their immutable traits should not stop them.
