Storm Eunice | Planes struggling to land in 75 mph winds | Heathrow Airport

With winds gusting in excess of 80 mph, it was business as usual for London Heathrow Airport this afternoon, but just slightly more difficult for the pilots!

This is just a short video of some of the movements between 1130 and 1300, when the wind was at its worse. Several aircraft had to divert to airports in other countries, not ideal if you're a passenger but there's ever so much that can be done.

Dang, I heard that the Italia and the Emirates went around three times.
These planes are literally coming down sideways, and then straightening up at the last moment. Kudos to the pilots who kept calm and fought the weather to get down safely.

Actually, all of them going around means the pilots put safety first instead of worrying about costs of fuel, personnel and time "wasted". It is a good sign, as frequent flyers know.
Being far from the ground when something unpredictable hits (like a wind gust) is uncomfortable but completely harmless. But when 10 feet from the ground, where the slightest wiggle could easily smash a wing tip, an engine or the tail into the ground, that is an actual danger to the plane's integrity.
Classic phrases all pilots are taught: "As long as we have airspeed, (something else I can't recall) and altitude, we're good." and "When in doubt, go around!"
Summary: A go around should make you feel safer as a passenger and increase your trust and respect for the pilots, don't worry!

My daughter was on one of those planes. I'm grateful to the pilot that got it down safely.

We had this going on at Harry Reid airport in Las Vegas a few days ago. But throw in a dust storm on top of the winds.

Nicely captured! I can really feel how it struggled against the winds force.
Thank you for sharing.

Even the massive Airbus A380 had to abort landing.
Crazy.

Tremendous wind force powerful enough to blow these big birds around. Even the A380 got a buffeting. Thank goodness they had more than one attempt to get on the deck! ✈️👍

You can see the point the pilots think "nah... sod this". :)

Those poor people who live right next to that flight path. How dangerous is that😱 surely you shouldn't have houses so close with planes that low
