Storm Noa: Planes struggle to land at Heathrow

Winds of 70mph left planes swaying in the skies above London as pilots attempted to land during Storm Noa.

The cult YouTube aviation channel Big Jet TV was there to capture all the spills and skills necessary to land passenger jets in the howling crosswinds.

What people don't see is the dedicated team of air traffic controllers that keep the airspace safe even in challenging circumstances like this. At one point the Bovingdon stack was closed due to the storm passing through, and the controllers had to re-route traffic to different stacks. The pilots are in charge of 1 plane, whereas controllers can have the responsibility of up to 20 aircraft at one time! Massive respect to the controllers and pilots!

I flew from terminal 5 to Edinburgh on 1415 flight, delayed due to that weather, eventually took off about 1500. Easily the worst flight I've ever done. Sat there as we took off, feeling the plane swing and all that went through my head was " I wish I took the train!". The skill of the pilots and crew are second to none.
