What do you hear people say about OCD? 🤔

Thank you for this - as a fellow OCD therapist I know how important it is to debunk myths about OCD, because these negative narratives just perpetuate the shame and stigma that can exist for people

I will say OCD has lead me to faith and opportunities to advocate some for OCD but in no way shape, or form would I ever say OCD is a gift. Hearing someone say that would really upset me because OCD is the most draining thing I've had to live with. Mental illnesses are no joke. Most are all battled internally, so people may think living with OCD is a gift, or it's just a personality quirk, when internally the person with OCD is facing battles every second of the day.

I'm so glad that I have found this channel. Real Event OCD has been haunting me for the past couple of months and I'm glad to know that I'm not evil.

Nate, I love you. I've watched you for a few years and I bought your course early last year, and I would love to hear a video talking about intrusive urges and sensations and the guilt that comes along with them. That is my most debilitating symptom

1:27 thank you! I don’t have the urge to clean because I like cleanliness, in fact, I’m quite messy. I feel like if I clean, I’ll find something I don’t want to find like bugs or mold. That would cause anxiety, so basically I’m anxious about becoming anxious. Same with going to the doctor.

Edit: would like to add I do have periods where I do become excessively focused on cleanliness and there are certain things that I have to rinse off even if they appear clean (ex: silverware) because of the fear that there is spit or leftover food or whatever on it. But the excessive focus on everything being clean? that’s not a constant feeling for me

This is a random comment and has nothing to do with the video but your videos really helped me a few years ago. Thank you. You’re the GOAT

You nailed it in my opinion. The outward actions are results of inward manifestations of your compulsions.

Oh yes, this is all too familiar. I've been told to "just stop being lazy" more times than I can count. Also, most people don't realize that there's this thing called hoarding OCD, which is pretty much the opposite of cleanliness. It can be anything really.

One of the big things that comes to my mind when I finally feel like I’m getting over one of my obsessions is what I’m gonna think about the obsession in the future or like what I’m gonna label it as. Then I fall back into the rabbit hole of trying to figure everything out.

My son totaled his car, then his next car had major issues and our other car burns oil. After the accident I had terrible OCD checking all of our cars so often. Never experienced this in my life. It is sometimes very debilitating but I know I have to not check the cars daily and multiple times a day. It’s painful but I am slowly moving away from daily, to a few times a week and I hope to get it down to 1x a week for the car that burns oil.

Chidi from the Good Place is a good example of moral OCD. We don't all have a little OCD, though obsessions and compulsions are a part of common humanity (such as in trauma)--and becomes OCD when it becomes a pervasive pattern over a long period of time with clear rituals, right? And when it consumes a lot of your time and feels threatening if you don't do it?

Thank You for this! I appreciate this. I have really bad excessive thoughts all the time. I have severe anxiety. I have cleanliness part of OCD, but now the depression side of OCD.

I have a question, what about compulsions that ocd tells us “if you don’t do these you will stop liking what you loved” because fears of “if i won’t do that my family will be in danger” are of course not real, but there is a study that shows that if we think too much if we like something we will start liking it, we are reproggramming our brain with our thoughts, so os the danger real with the inside the brain threats?

Hi Nathan, can you do a topic on OCD with too much politeness, wanting to please others - way over the top?

Can you do a video about anger rumination? Like ruminating about nasty people who were mean to you, said nasty things etc..
