Hello from my Social Studies class! We were studying the great depression and I told them about 'water pie'. They had never heard of anything like that and didn't believe me, so we watched your video. Thank you for making it and keeping history alive!

My Mom made what she called a "Sugar Pie" that looks a lot like this pie! She did sprinkle cinnamon on top before she baked it...and maybe a scant amount of nutmeg. We always loved this pie, but never considered that she may have made it to make ends meet because there were nine of us to feed! Thanks for sharing this recipe! I will try it and see how it compares with her version.

I make this all the time but mix some pumpkin pie spice to the dry ingredients....way tastier! I recommend adding an extra half a tablespoon of flour and a tablespoon of cornstarch. You can even substitute 1/2 of the water for applesauce and then just add apple pie spice (pumpkin pie spice works also). If you do this add an extra tablespoon of cornstartch. Very good and with these very easy changes I reccomend 10/10.
