Poverty Pie 🥧 Great Depression Era Recipe - Cheap Dessert

This is a recipe for Poverty Pie that goes all the way back to The Great Depression, maybe even farther. My Mom grew up during The Great Depression. Like many children did at the time, she dropped out of school in the mid-1930's, at the age of 14, to get a job and earn money for the family. She became a cook and housekeeper for a wealthy family. That is where she learned how to cook American food and when her life-long love of collecting recipes began. This is a very simple recipe to make and requires only a few very basic ingredients.

When you mentioned kids having to drop out of school and work reminds me of my parents. They told us they had to drop out and work to help out too. I think 8th grade was the furthest my Dad went. My Mom too but can't remember when she had to quit school. They didn't have a diploma but they provided for 6 kids and themselves. They always had a garden too. We always had something to eat even if was beans and rice and homemade cornbread and veggies from the garden and handme downs to wear from family. Looks good Grandpa.

My dad dropped out in second grade, and off to work he went. He had sixteen siblings, and all were sent to work very young. As a mom I can’t imagine. I won’t even let my middle schooler walk home from the bus stop! Crazy!

Looks yummy! I love recipes from the Great Depression. Definitely relevant now with the cost of food and gasoline so high. Everyone will be searching for frugal meals. Thanks!

I’m researching Depression-era recipes for school and I’m glad to come across yalls video, much more wholesome seeing a Grandma and Grandpa cooking up a nice pie instead of reading the same old same old about water pie 50 times

Potato Peel Pie was a dish used in the British Channel Island of Guernsey during the Nazi occupation of WW2 when the islanders were on very meagre rations. Peelings were used to make a sort of open pie crust, then filled with mashed potato and chopped beetroot before being baked in the oven. The story is used in the movie, "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". Highly recommended.

Grandpa Feral, Using the egg beater brought back some great memories. I have to say the color of the meringue was beautiful. It looked so much like my moms pies years ago. Thank you both for all you do. It is a gem to watch.

It’s so amazing what can be done with so little! I make custard pie but use 5 egg yolks. It’s ingenious to use the thickening power of flour to stretch the yolks! I will absolutely try this, with a pinch of nutmeg in the custard.
The way our economy is headed these recipes can help stretch our food budgets. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. ♥️👍🙏🇺🇸🤓

Thank you for sharing your mother's story..I had a mentally ill mother..so I had to take over the house at 14 because my poor father was overwhelmed..

I did not have to drop out out school..I had to be very organized...

Fourteen is a young age to learn so much..with so many people depending on you .

I hope she got to live a nice life later.

My mother too. She had to drop out of school during the war and move to another town and went to work in a restaurant and later a pharmacy. Kids are most certainly coddled today!

My dad was born in 1943, but his brothers were all born before 1937. My grandparents married in the mid 1920’s. Oh the stories they told us grandkids. People were so resilient in those times. ❤

My aunt used to make pies like this for family reunions. She called them egg custard. Also made buttermilk pies. Both are still some of my favorite!!

I like how Grandpa keeps saying he is "beating up" the eggs. Hahaha he is so funny without even trying. Pie came out amazing!

My grandmother used to make this pie. Added sliced bananas to the filing. A treat the entire family looked forward to!
