although I'd say skill level may be set at any given point in time and confidence could influence whether you max it out or not, there's still how fit an individual is. If you're faster and stronger with better cardio you can play at a bit higher level, I think.

It's like if you fought against a clone of yourself but they had bad sleep or were sick, they'd still have equal skills but would lose way more often.

Plus, I think most sports (and life) are not black and white. It is a bunch of gray area where it is just a statistical probability that is somewhere between 0% to 100%. You have x% chance you can make that basketball shot, or land that punch on this opponent, or whatever. It's not guaranteed. I think you see upsets when chance and/or a more fit body are in play
