I agree with his comments. I trained judo for 10 years and became a black belt, but injuries have caught up to me. Now I train mostly BJJ because it's easier on the body. But the intensity from judo has helped me transition well into BJJ and helped me push the pace in my training. I just wish the BJJ community was as open to cross training at different schools as the judo community. Judo believes in letting the individual become the best, so train anywhere that will make your judo better, and we welcomed outside people to train with us because we could learn from them. I would train at 3 different judo schools during competition time, and that was common. BJJ has more pride in their school, so you only train with members of your organization. And everyone wears a team gi from their BJJ school and stays within their team to train. I wish there was more openness with BJJ. It would advance grappling a lot.

I trained in Judo for years and then in 1996 started training in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu. I thought wow this is great all on the ground and I don't have to take the beating of being thrown.

Train both guys! Find a balance. Longevity is important. Have fixed days for each discipline. They are from the same family.

I started Judo at my 6 years of age and focused on it for the next 6 years.
Judo helped me survive many bad situations during my school time. It helped me humble bullies 3 classes above me. It helped me deal with bullies head taller than me, it helped me deal with jerks at night clubs.
Definitely worth learning guys. If i could learn it and train it as a kid, so can you during your teenage or adult years, don't be p*ssy. It's for ur own good! If you like it, go for it!

I started off in judo 11 years old then jiu jitsu at 25. Judo involves bigger more power based movements and gave me advantages vs bjj guys when starting bjj. Bjj has its advantages in longer drawn out conflicts. Overall judo can get a guy off you in the streets better than bjj as bjj requires you to be vulnerable to get into it such as on your back. First 60 seconds of a sreet fight you bjj will need to be high level to avoid damage from an all out assault if on your back.

i first tried judo but found it very difficult and was very afraid of being thrown or injuring my knee, jiu jitsu was easier for me to learn and felt much safer to practice, i liked the slower pace

Judo is amazing and would be more amazing to learn if the standard mats were like bed mattresses to minimize fall injuries. Yes I'm serious.

The problem I've had with training Judo is you're more likely to get injured. I injured my ankle and arm and it made it hard to do my day job.

very interstingl interview without lot of empty talk. I am a boxer and I love watching Judo etc. What Travis says about the kids that Judo is good start for any sportactivitys I agree completly...If parents ask me if I wanna train there kids, I always say to start with Judo becaus of respect, good body awarness etc. and later on boxing what ever ones enjoyes for training. Also the other topics what he mentioned..realy great honest and straight. I dont know him as a fighter yet, but his spirit is of a real martial artist without blowing up himself...thanks we need more interviews like that in youtube.

I agree with most of what he said. And I have used BJJ twice in my life to keep me safe from violence. For context I trained Judo recreationally in the 1980s and early 90s and along with Karate and some boxing starting earlier . BJJ was a game-changer and I started training late 1993-ish. Much easier on the body and because it was systematised and on was taught to be relaxed it allowed me to submit good Judo black belts as a white belt, or at least be able to go the distance (generally I used wrestling takedowns which worked well against judoka not used to single leg and double leg attacks, etc.) The arc of application and timing in Judo can be years and in BJJ it was weeks. Judo also cause a couple physical problems with limit my movements today. Now I am old, but for the general population, BJJ is much better, easier to learn, easier on the body (depending on training), and much more effective along with some basic takedowns and clinch work against punching. It is also more enjoyable.
