Real Muay thai fighters have awesome standing grappling . They will control, throw, and sweep your legs . The only thing a skilled Thai fighter needs to learn is ground fighting, and then all the lower weight classes of mma would be ruled by thai dudes

Edit: I consider wrestling/judo/jujutsu/ grappling in general ground fighting because it always ends on the ground .

Joe's a huge UFC fan. How awesome for him to be able to travel to see every UFC fight, everytime.

ive spared with some really good guys in Thailand and with retired former Rajadamnern stadium champions. If you haven’t felt that, you have no clue. You cant touch them, and with the amount of tricks they have; sweeps, disrupting your rhythm, timing.. you soon realise you have almost no chance doing anything to them. It’s like rolling with someone several belts above you.

Nothing against Jocko but he dogmatically defends jiu jitsu as the be all end all. Striking and grappling are two sides of the same coin

You need to work both if you want a true self defense experience

Agreed. I trained with 2 ncaa heavyweight champs for years. If they want to take you down, you are going down.

70% times you have to get in the ground but 100% times started on standing up.

Muay Thai on average is gonna win over bjj, because bjj guys have almost no takes downs, bjj is kinda funny in that they willingly lay on the ground

I've seen way too many grappler mistake their, "if you get that close to me I can grab you and take you down" and wind up getting their skull beat in by the right or left hand of a striker while they are tryimg just that.

Doesn't matter the fighting style. Everything boils down to timing and accuracy. You can get close enough for a grapple all you want, but if my foot work is in shape and my hands are quick, that's a problem. Vice versa. In both scenarios, it just takes the right person.

Andrew Tate is right jiu jitsu requires a fair fight, a Muay Thai fighter could knock multiple people in a flash, therefore, Muay Thai is better

Worth noting the guy they mentioned Mark Shultz. Took the fight literally the day of and won. Dude was a beast.

My 8 year old is cross training BJJ and Shinkiokushin - the best available combo as wrestling, grappling, striking covered and they can have fully resisting opponents. Muithai for an 8 years old is just pad work in our area.

I think the Leon Edwards wins over Kumaru Usman really shows this. If you can't get submissions and takedowns in the UFC you'll only get so far, but without a good standing game you're probably not gonna get anywhere.

If you've got a year to train: Muay Thai
If you've got 5 years to train: Judo
If you've got 10 years to train: Jiu Jitsu

“Jocko is being biased towards grappling”

0:50 - Jocko literally says grappling is not a guarantee against striking

In Jiu Jitsu I am taught to use the clinch to work takedowns from Judo and Wrestling. We have short shots. We have punch blocks that include defending round house kicks. Going against a Muay Thai practitioner still sounds really dangerous.
