iPhone 13 Breaks Easier Than the iPhone 12! Impact and Scratch Tests

So we take our trusty force meter and did the same impact pressure test as we did on the iPhone 12 when it first came out.

What we discovered really surprised us. The screen on the iPhone 13 cracked much easier than the screen on the iPhone 12. In fact, the range that the screen broke falls more in line with normal tempered glass screen protectors than the ceramic shield found on the iPhone 12's.

We thought that getting a screen protector was going to be pointless with the Ceramic Shield BUT our little test has proven otherwise...

The imbalance from the larger camera that others are mentioning is a good point. Maybe it would be better to test with a case/bumper on to make it more level?

Makes me wonder if the additional protrusion of the camera lens compared to last year created an imbalance snd made the screen crack under less pressure.

The reason why it cracked is because the camera bump is much larger, the phone has lesser contact with the table thus more pressure is felt by the screen

Since the camera lenses have grown in size the phone has more inclination while placed on the table. Hence, there's a difference in the results. More inclination means less pressure needed to break.

Hang the camera off the edge of the bench so the phone lays more flat to eliminate any bend stress which could be contributing to the lower number.

I just watch some teardown's of the iPhone 13 and the display was significantly slimmer

Lol, my 13 has been getting madly abused for like 2 years, all scratched up and messy, but the screen finally had a small crack yesterday. I'd say I'm quite impressed with the durability

Your findings stack up with the teardowns. People mention how thin screen assembly in iPhone 13 is compared to previous one. This might be either because of thinner display, glass or both. So in my opinion, your test is valid and unfortunately, 13’s are a bit more fragile than 12’s.

It shouldn't be a force unit. It should be pressure unit and thats the force over the area of the tip

One day I threw my iPhone 13 Pro Max at a wall very lightly while in a video chat with my friends. I had “20 Feet Drop Protection Case” and “8X stronger #1 Screen Protecter.” What happened was the Phones screen itself shattered and not a single other thing was damaged. It still worked tho… any thoughts on how my wall doesn’t even look like it got touched by a baby’s light touch and it freaking broke into practical pieces?

Does the size of camera bump hinder the test, if the camera bump is bigger that would cause more flex when pressed down.

Maybe it broke easier because of the way the camera layout is, maybe it has more flex in the chassis and it didn’t read as much pressure. ??? I’m not sure lol 😂

i feel the contributing factor for the screen getting cracked at lower points is cus of the camera bumps tbh
