They give you 1-2 extras of smaller pieces depending on how many are used in the set. That 1x2 brick with the technic on it from bag one is too large to be extra. So you missed something. The orange weird looking thing is a brick separating tool to help you if you put something together wrong.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure those "feet" were supposed to be attached to something on the bit underneath or something because those springs are meant to hold it up in place but allow it to be pressed down like you would the actual system. At least, that's what makes sense.
