The Tragedy Of The Romanovs Explained

The House of Romanov ruled over Russia for over 300 years. The Romanovs produced some of history’s most famous rulers from Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Ivan the Terrible, and Princess Anastasia. The latter was the daughter of the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II. The last Romanov family member was assassinated in 1918 after Nicholas II abdicated the throne following the February Revolution by the Bolsheviks which established the Russian Republic. It was a tragic final end to a historic ruling family. But there were other tragic signs of this family's demise even before the revolution took place. Here are the details.

Do you think it's possible that any of the Romanovs secretly survived?

This is one of the most bizarre stories in modern history. Worth looking into.

I have read some of the correspondence between Tzar Nicholas & his cousin, King George V (whom the Tzar gave the "pet" name Georgie). The two families often spent summers together &, as you say, were very close. However, reading the final letter from the Tzar, begging Georgie to provide safe haven to he & his family is absolutely heart breaking. My husband travels to Russia occasionally for business & asked his driver (after I realised that they would be going through the city of Yekaterinburg) if he would take him to see the Ipatiev House (in the basement of which the Romanov's were executed). The driver explained that the Ipatiev House was no longer there as, even in death, the Romanovs were seen to be such a threat to the "new Russia" the Ipatiev House was razed to the ground, until not one stone stood upon another. The driver was faithful to his word though & took my husband to see the land where the house stood. In it's place? Ironically, a religious edifice called, "Cathedral on the Blood".

Thank you for a no nonsense concise history of this unfortunate family. So many channels portray them as devils or blameless saints. They were just human beings overwhelmed by the tsunami of events. Nicholas was a good husband and father but he was a lousy Tsar.

I feel sad that none of the Russia royals live. The young princess didn't even get a chance to have children of their own. May they rest in peace.

This feels like such a long time ago but it really wasn't. There are people still alive today who were around when the Romanovs were murdered.

What a sad ending. They didn’t need to be killed of that way. It’s just a shame there relatives couldn’t take them in and then the Romanovs could have survived. What a sad sad ending they did not deserve to go out the way they did. Sad story. Sad 😔

The Romanovs сould have survived, at least the chuildren, if your king George V had given them a shelter.

Grunge, you forgot to mention that they were eventually canonized as saints by the Russian Orthodox Church. My late husband (who was Russian) grew up in the old Soviet Union and didn't know much about that history because the Soviets didn't allow for open discussion of this.

What is the name of the piano piece playing in the background? To this day the story of the Romanovs still captivates me. How truly tragic.

With the Romanovs executed imperial rule in Russia came to an end and later came a century of Soviet control under Communism which led to future conflicts including with America.
