If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live it's entire life believing that it's stupid.

Parent/school counselor conference. She tells me my child had kind of a low (75) IQ test score. And I looked at her and asked who read the questions to him as he was dyslexic and was struggling to read. She looked blank and then changed direction completely. That was the start of a much better relationship for me and especially for my child.

Context: Neil got an A instead of the usual A+ on his exam, and his mom confronted him.

When I was a kid we were give three different IQ tests to test the tests. I scored higher than anyone else in my class. When talking to the researcher about the test she told me I scored high enough to figure out these tests didn't mean anything in the real world.

Agree with the name discent, yet IQ is THE greatest predictor of success, so there is that

Whatever you want to say about it doesn't matter. What matters is IQ test scores can predict life outcomes.

The school IQ test measures the ability to pass IQ tests. Some fantastically deep thinkers may not complete very many timed questions. Many of those questions are landmines which raise questions when applied to various fields.

That's not true actually. The "Original" was indeed like this. But the tests nowadays are different and test more parts of your brains thinking

Lots of people have been doing that on YouTube. They confuse intelligence test with observation test. It is so annoying.

❤️ Neil DeGrasse Tyson…he’s spoken out about this many times. Makes me so happy because you know people around here day to day, in the schools and people around- they don’t seem to think that way! My son is behind reading/math and would not do good on tests….but he’s still really smart, sees things in a really unique way that a lot don’t. I try to remind him that type of intelligence counts. Nice to hear it constantly from someone like Neil Degrasse. Elon Musks schools doesn’t give letter grades either or have traditional school subjects.

“Quotient” means it’s one thing divided by another. Which I never quite understood. Apparently the test measures your “mental age”. And that is divided by your “biological age” and then ×100. So 100 indicates an average score for your “biological age”.

So if somebody aged 60 gets a score of 150, does that mean their “mental age” is 90?!?

Neil completely missed the mark on this one... This is clearly stuff he knows nothing about...

People like Spearman were at the time interested in 'intelligence' and finding a way to measure it. They came up with a test which they could do a factor analysis on to find a 'g-factor'. The 'g-factor' was supposed to be the most general common factor amongst multiple intelligence measurements and so it was thought that this g-factor represented something like intelligence.

Later on the model got more developed to what we use nowadays.

The thing is that the word 'intelligence' has a very vague meaning in colloquial use. When you ask people what exactly they mean with intelligence, you get all sorts of answers.

When talking about intelligence in the context of psychology, then its pretty clear what we mean and this meaning differs from the 'normal' use: we understand that for intelligence there exist a bunch of different subcategories like workinh memory etc. So intelligence just means whatever we measure with the test.

The things we measure with the test are for example: verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, ...

So the test says nothing about creativity or practical skills or athleticism or the ability to read a map or navigate a conversation, ...

NOBODY(no professional psychologist) claims that the test measures this or that the test measures someones full mental capabilities or something. Only people who dont understand the test claim this. This whole conversation and controverse with iq tests literally just exists because people hear 'intelligence', assume it means what they think it means in colloquial use and get mad or angry without understanding the psychological definition or how the test is made.

All the categories which the test tests for are useful, real and predicts something about your capabilities. IT DOES NOT MEAN IT DEFINES YOU. Total IQ says jackshit about you, someone with iq of 150 can have a disharmonic profile and end up with difficulties learning or functioning because of their iq profile. What matters is knowing your profile so you can figure out strengths and weaknesses and so adapt good strategies to overcome your troubles.

Just to add: All online iq tests are bs, yes even the mensa ones. IQ test should be taken from a professional. Its a battery of tests that is exhausting and expensive to take.

In the end, your iq profile DOES predict a lot about you, but not everything. Its useful in knowing what works and what doesnt work for you and so it can help you with identifying whatever problems you have in your life.
