It's 1612. After the Time of Troubles, the colonization of Siberia starts afresh. The Russians expand along the rivers of Siberia in the Taiga belt. Sable and black fox are the most desired by fur trappers. The Siberian fur trade accounts for 20% of the state's budget. In 1639 Cossacks reach the Pacific, and a century later Vitus Bering crosses over to Alaska.Russia's border with China is established by the Treaty of Narchinsk, and Siberia irrevocably becomes part of Russia.

In Chinese the slang for russian are 毛子 which mean fur or hair people.
Either due to fur trade, their body hair or the fur cloth they wear

As always great work man.

It is a very good video. There is an error on the map regarding Early Russia-China borders though. What is shown is the contemporary border which mostly came about after the treaty of Aigun in the 1800s.

It's interesting how similar and how different the Siberian conquest was to the European settlement of Canada and and the American Midwest in order to acquire beaver pelts.

The importance of river transport to this is a really interesting counter-point to Dugin's claims that western power is water based while Eurasian/Russian power is land based. Trade and empire are always, especially in the premodern era, based in water routes.

The Russian Colonization of Sibiria is like the Bizzaro version of the American Colonization of the West.
The Cossacks are like the Cowboys, and even the powerful indigenous force of the Chinese, is like the Mexican Empire which America faced.

This channel should have way more views than it has. Very well made and informative videos, love your voice and narration style.

Most YouTube videos on Russian history cover Imperial period and Bolshevik Revolution while Moscow Tsardom is generally overlooked. Would be great if you’d cover some more of this period like the Time of Troubles that is mentioned here.

This was a great and concise video. I love that you point out that Siberia is in fact a colony and basically the longest lasting one at this point in history. Probably due to Russia’s mostly libertarian attitude to the natives.

6:16 Oh NO! A mistake! Your map shows the border after the Convention of Peking (1860). Outer Manchuria (the coastline) was chinese until then.

(Well, techincaly all of China was manschurian at the time, put that would go to far.)
