Sleep apnea, also spelled sleep apnoea, is a sleep disorder in which pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breathing during sleep occur more often than normal.[1] Each pause can last for a few seconds to a few minutes and they happen many times a night.[1] In the most common form, this follows loud snoring.[2] There may be a choking or snorting sound as breathing resumes.[1] Because the disorder disrupts normal sleep, those affected may experience sleepiness or feel tired during the day.[1] In children, it may cause hyperactivity or problems in school.[2]

Sleep apnea may be either obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in which breathing is interrupted by a blockage of air flow, central sleep apnea (CSA), in which regular unconscious breath simply stops, or a combination of the two.[1] OSA is the most common form.[1] OSA has four key contributors; these include “anatomical compromises" like a narrow, crowded, or collapsible upper airway. Or “non-anatomical” ones like an ineffective pharyngeal dilator muscle function during sleep, airway narrowing during sleep, or unstable control of breathing (high loop gain).[11] Other risk factors include being overweight, a family history of the condition, allergies, and enlarged tonsils.[7] Some people with sleep apnea are unaware they have the condition.[1] In many cases it is first observed by a family member.[1] Sleep apnea is often diagnosed with an overnight sleep study.[8] For a diagnosis of sleep apnea, more than five episodes per hour must occur.[12]

I'm actually surprised there are so many people experiencing this issue. I thought I was having some exotic experience. Not that I want everyone to be sick, but it's so comforting to know I'm not alone in this struggle. And yeah sleep apnea is a real handicap.

Nice and very informative video. Sleep apnea can be serious as it may impact our overall health and can increase the risk of heart disease due to reduced oxygen supply.
Snoring can be the main symptom of any sleep apnea. Snoring once in a while is alright, but if you are snoring for a quite long period and if your snoring is affecting your day-time activities and your quality of life, then it is always good to talk to a specialist.

I have been diagnosed with severe CSA but never knew it to be what I hope is the main cause of my daily struggles over the last several years. At random times of the day, I lose all ability to read or understand spoken language. I personally never linked that problem to a sleep issue but I hope the treatment will reverse it. I am supposed to start treatment here soon so I hope this is going to fix this issue within the next few weeks after I get my ASV.

I have suffered from it since childhood. After a sleep test, doctors say your breath stops 11 times an hour, a previous test showed this happens 16 times an hour. Anyway, I am not diagnosed having sleep apnea, but it is ruining my life. It happens every night, making me feel down and having headache in the morning. Sometimes when I'm tired I cannot wake up, and I almost experience death. It's terrible and terrifying. Donno what to do.

my husband told me I stop breathing in my sleep and appear to be suffocating to death. Don’t worry he went back to sleep because “it happens all the time” and he has to keep waking me up. I requested an appointment for a sleep study. I’m sleeping on the couch because, it’s clear I’m interrupting his sleep.

Black pepper triggers my apnea. Also red pepper flakes. If I avoid those I sleep well. My apnea can be horrible, it can trigger anxiety issues. I control it with my diet. Good luck, and sleep well.
