Tesla cabin overheat protection feature

Tesla has a nice feature called Cambin Overheat Protection. It will monitor the car when it's parked and make sure that the temperature does not exceed 40°C/104°F. It seems to pull about 1 km of range per hour. A rough estimate shows that even after 8 hours in the sun, you only lose 2 % range. In comparison, running normal HVAC will consume 10 % range.

Thank you Bjorn for doing the tests we always wondered about and subjecting yourself to the hardships those tests entail.

It doesn't seem to be much of a loss during a full day. That is one feature I will certainly be testing and measuring here in Florida as our average temperature in summer is 35 Celsius. Remember to re-hydrate!

I would love to see a model 3 version of this video

I have to like this one because you are testing the feature with your life.

My MS 75D did use 7-8% of energy per day with overheat protection in Switzerland. It‘s actively cooling the car with AC. I tested this feature for one week at a big parking spot without shadows. I am sure that energy consumption will be much higher in hotter countries.

I wonder how would this car do in my country, it gets up to 47 degrees Celcius here would be a concern for the battery pack.

Hi Bjørn, we use the Cabin Overheat Protection in the same way. We think it is very useful. Also to pull of the A/C, when it is not so hot outside for a bit more range. Best regards Basti

Here in Australia we can get days above 40 during summer (47.3 degrees - happened in Sydney suburb of Penrith this year), I guess in this case the compressor would be running and current draw would be at the 1kw (or Higher if its hotter?)

Normal summer here in Australia is like 30-35°C daily. Some days 40-45°C on extremes. haha.

Can you change the 40°C default temperature to lets say 35 instead?

That feature would come in handy here in Florida :-)

Remember that the fan runs on 12v, while the compressor runs on main battery.
And of course there is a huge differnce in power drawn.
The fan I recon will draw around 100-150w on full blast..

When I lived out in New Mexico we had 116°F during the daytime ambient so in a car it would be much hotter.

I run the climate all-day and charge up at night, trying to keep battery at around 50-60%

Hello Bjorn, thank you very much for all the great videos, life saver!! Can we adjust the Overheat Protection temp. from 40º to a lower figure?

Ohh yea baby! This is the Bjorn I know.

I will always like any post that involves Bjorn shirtless. I almost didn’t because Jergen was not there.
