Gum recession should be treated when there is not enough attached tissues present. The attached tissues of your gums is thick and protective, whereas the mucosa is thinner and important for mobility. If your gum recession is bad enough where there is very little or not attached tissue remaining, then a graft is likely needed and you'll need to see your periodontist for options.
