As a drywall/drywall repair man of over 30 years, there's SO much I could say here. However, it's a basic patch that most anyone can do relatively correct with the directions presented. One thing I MUST say is, know the *thickness* of the existing drywall before getting new drywall. Usually 1/2" or 5/8" thick. Sometimes 3/4 of an inch thick. It's a CRUCIAL piece of knowledge before proceeding. 😉👍

Yeah, it'd be a lot easier to measure your patch, cut rather than trace. Not to mention, make sure IF TRACING you have both pieces facing top up or bottom up, so they're exact inches not flipped inches. Sander is a bit much, makes a mess, just take your blade and trim a little off edges. You want your patch about 1/4" smaller than your hole. But all in all, good way to do a basic drywall repair. Mesh tape is made for hot mud, the powder mud you mix. Anyone using blue top or lighter will have a weak patch. But all in all, not a bad repair. I'm being picky as a pro. 8/10 for repair.

Welcome
Why are you make measurements from damage drywall just measure the opening and cuts new drywall once.
You need to patch with hot mud (easy sand) not with pink patch you can have cracks in the future. Pink patch it is for small applications.
I never see same one sanding the edges with sander.
Measure twice cut once.

Seems pointless to find the studs when all you did was cut to them then measure half the thickness of a stud
