They were both in the wrong, Tom was in the wrong for setting his expectations onto her when she clearly started from the very beginning what she wanted, Summer was in the wrong for continuing their relationship when she knows how he truly felt about her

Tom fell way too hard for her and didn't hear her when she said she didn't want anything serious, or all the warning signs along the way. That said, Tom is right when he says "Friends my balls" in that their first kiss was 100% initiated by her, the first time they had sex was as well and she was exclusively dating him for like 9 months. Like Tom said, that's not how you treat your friend.

The love we give needs to line up with the reality we’re living in. If we love so much and give all of ourselves to a one-sided love, we will lose sight of the world around us. Open your eyes because it will definitely save you 500 days.

I’m so tired of people defending summer acting like she did nothing wrong yeah she told him what she wanted but then holds his hand and leads him on more and more and it confuses him and then she gets married like tf she isn’t a good person

This film messed me up 😂 when I was younger I couldn’t understand her at all and why she was being so harsh to him, then a few years down the line and I’ve been in the exact same relationship, where I’ve not wanted to commit to a full time relationship but knowing they are a good person I don’t want to let them go. I do think Summer’s character is a bit of a coward to not confront it though!

Under the right circumstances and backstory anyone can be a tom and anyone can be a summer. Both flawed human beings just like the rest of us that needed to grow. No need to put either on the crucifix. Cest la vid

The funny thing is that I first saw this movie when I was 17 and thought it was a good movie now I am almost 30 and I found “my summer” and now realize what a masterpiece this movie is

Up until this point, I think he was in the wrong. But when she clearly was presented with the reality of the scenario, she should’ve ended it right then. The way she tried to break it off at the diner like it wasn’t nothin then not telling him about the engagement before that party... just plain evil. He was an idiot to begin with but she was no angel.

People are blaming Summer and Tom, but I would say both are in the wrong, but Tom even more. Summer made it clear from early on she wasn’t looking for anything serious, and instead of keeping that in mind throughout the course of their relationship, Tom decided to ignore her warning.

When it comes to Summer, she had more of the power in the relationship as Tom was more into her then she was into him, and she shouldn’t have let certain boundaries cross, such as them spending the night together on going on dates. It’s obvious she was an unhappy person and using him to fill the void of loneliness

Summer thinks sex is casual just like she met other guys before.

It is a great film because it is so real, apply this to real people: For summer; Why would you stay 9 months with someone you don't love or don't have any intention to go further? For Tom; why would you stay with someone that doesn't love you or respect your feelings for 9 months? Good news for Toms in this world, you will learn a critical lesson: Respect yourself first.

Most people get the movie wrong but a lot of the people that know summer isn't a manic pixie dream girl but still defend her are wrong too. She was immature and played with tom but through that she grows and gets married, meanwhile, tom kept projecting onto summer but through her learned he needed to work on himself and follow his dream.
