I was in Dublin recently, and the Taxi drivers all wanted to know about how few regulations there were in America. They were all disappointed when I told them it was regulated in many regions, including most major cities. They would say, "...but I thought America was the land of the free?"
It was really interesting to see how disappointed they were that we didn't live up to our own ideals they are jealous of.

What doesn't the government require we get its permission to do? Government permission is required for building structures on your land, working most jobs, opening and operating businesses, etc.

Licensing is largely due to lobbyists. Educational institutions and unions that artificially raise the bar to entry for profit. It's a terrible thing.

I was telling my 11-year-old niece about regulation and I used a hair salon as an example. I told her if she started doing her friend's hair and charging them money she would be breaking the law.

In my county you need a license to operate a lawn-cutting business but the local government fines you $180 if you don't cut your own lawn often enough. I shit you not, this is the world we live in.
