This talk will give an overview of MARE2DEM, a freely-available code for forward modeling and inversion of electromagnetic geophysical data. MARE2DEM uses an unstructured model grid that can easily incorporate complicated 2D conductivity geometries, including rugged topography and other geologic surfaces. Accurate forward responses are automatically computed to a user-specified tolerance using an iterative goal-oriented adaptive finite element method. A parallel data decomposition allows for efficient computations by dividing the input data into subsets of receivers, transmitters and frequencies that are independently modeled in parallel. Non-linear inversion for the conductivity of arbitrarily shaped 2D parameters is accomplished with a fast parallel version of the Occam method. I will briefly introduce the theory behind the MARE2DEM code and then present examples that demonstrate how to use MARE2DEM and its MATLAB-based graphical interface and supporting routines to model and invert magnetotelluric and controlled-source electromagnetic data, as well as to study the physics of electromagnetic induction.
