By revealing the graphite, you can turn the pencil to the side as you do with charcoal. This method works really well with building mass, it forces you to think more about using the whole arm instead of the hand and wrist.😄

I use the long pencil point technique for shading my realistic portrait drawings. but I lay it flat at an angle. Stephen Bauman is a great example of being a master at this technique. I also find that the sharp point helps make very fine details like wispy lashes and eyebrow hairs.

7:47 What on earth is the point of sharpening a pencil like that? You could just buy a mechanical drafting pencil (that is, the clutch-style lead holders for 2mm leads) and just extend the lead a bunch. Not that I see how it makes any difference in how the lead wears — all it does is make you rightfully afraid of breaking the lead, and thus forces you to use a very light hand. But you could teach yourself to do that with a normal pencil or mechanical pencil.
