Understanding Dispensationalism and the Bible's Big Picture with Mike Vlach

What is dispensationalism? How does dispensationalism differentiate itself as a system from other ways of interpreting Scripture? I'm joined by special guest Michael Vlach to discuss his new book Dispensational Hermeneutics. We talk about how dispensationalism is more than just an eschatology, but really a whole framework for reading the Bible.

I love Vlach's work on eschatology! A friend of mine bought his book for me and I couldn't put it down! This book greatly helped me to understand how the big picture of eschatology, which is clearly revealed in Daniel and Revelation, is indeed simply and profoundly laid out in Scripture literally. Spiritualizing eschatology, as some systems do, complicates things tremendously. Looking forward to Vlach's new book: The New Creation model.

In defending the Dispensationalism hermeneutic J.C.Ryle said that if we believe that Christ prophecies concerning his first advent literally, there is no reason why we shouldn’t believe prophecies about his second advent will be literally fulfilled.
I was at the Shepherds Conference where MacArthur said every self respecting Calvinist should be a pre-millennialist. During a break I found myself in conversation with a bunch of Presbyterians who asked my opinion on the millennial kingdom question. They were shocked when I said it was in the whole tenor of Scripture. A couple years ago I did a read through of the Bible and wrote down every reference with premillennial implications. My list has 1646 verses!

What cemented my Dispensationalism was Reformed theology's inability to consistently interpret the Torah. I found RT's inconsistency jarring.

"The Big Picture holistically." Love it. So simple, even children can understand it. Why some adults don't want to believe it is beyond me. Maranatha!

This was so helpful to me. Helped in many ways I wasn’t able to articulate myself when speaking to Amillenial friends. Thank you so much. So calm and informative and interesting. Clarified so much for me.

I really appreciate how they did not straw-man the reformed view (non-disp view). Although I disagree with disp. I really appreciate your respectful tone towards other views.

Great interview.
I’ve seen a lot of young men lean towards post mill views lately. There seems to be a greater desire to do something politically and post mill views bolster that desire. Theonomy seems to grab people that want to make a change for God and be tough.

Excellent podcast. I think Dr. Vlach is one of the clearest expositors of Dispensational theology. We published this book in Spanish last year and has been a blessing for many.

The problem with dispensationalism is that it denies or ignores shadow/substance in many passages thereby prioritizing the shadow which passes away when substance arrives. This causes a sensational eisegesis of doctrines such as separation of the church and Israel, secret rapture etc…

I'm thankful for the grace given to Michael for this work and for Michael's gentleness and kindness when dealing with these issues. He holds firm to his position as a serious student of the Word but communicates it with grace and kindness which is what we are all called to do.

There is a good reason why I listen to Amir Tsafarti, Dr Ken Johnson (his lectures on the beliefs of the early church fathers are solid), Dr Andy Wood (aside from OSAS) JD Farag, Greg Laurie, Chuck Smith, Jan Markel. Solid Dispensational ideas, pre-tribulation rapture, pre-millenialist.

It would be interesting to see a discussion with Mike and Amir Tsafarti vs the likes of NT Wright, Albert Mohler, Doug Wilson.

I really appreciate the comment about Israel being the focus as much as God in His Word reveals it to be so.
To believe that the prophecies concerning Christ's first coming were ALL fulfilled to the letter and then to do the opposite, by allergorizing/spiritualizing the prophecies concerning His second coming is heartbreaking and makes studying the Word of God very confusing!
God has a purpose and plan for both Israel and the Church, the Body of once you have some understanding and knowledge of the 'big picture' of His plan it becomes the greatest joy to the heart ❤.
Another book I would recommend is called ' The Bible: The Big Picture' by John and Lori Verstegen.
One suggestion I would make is to read ALL the Scripture references...God's story has to sink into the heart.
I will be ordering the book talked about in this video which I stumbled upon just now.

The Church (Body of Christ) starts in Acts chapter 9.
Acts chapter 2 is Peter’s Kingdom Gospel to the Jews.

21:45 In Luke 24:27 he says that, "Then beginning with Moses and with all the Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the Scriptures." How can Disp. say that the OT alone is sufficient to understand passages when Jesus Himself claimed otherwise. He explained how He is being written about in the OT Law and Prophets. Not to mention the Letter to the Hebrews. The NT should inform our understanding of the OT, not the other way around.
