Raising a 'theybe': checking in with the Florida family raising a gender neutral child

Sparrow, the little "theybe" from Florida instantly became famous in 2019 after 10 Tampa Bay introduced the world to the gender-neutral parenting phenomenon.

"Theybies" are babies being raised without known genders. The word is a play on the word "they" derived from the idea that the child would use they/them pronouns, a gender neutral alternative to she/her or he/him.

Sparrow's family intended to shield their biological sex from the outside world even going so far as to only allow trusted caregivers to change diapers.

I'm going to be insensitive and write the below comment using biological terms because writing and reading "they/them" everywhere sounds beyond weird and is incredibly difficult to follow.

This woman claims she wants her kids to make their own decisions when it comes to gender identity, but it's very obvious she is influencing them with her own opinions about gender. On Good Morning Britain she said her other daughter identifies as non-binary just like the adults in the household. Given that a very small minority of the population have this issue, I find it incredibly unlikely they coincidently raised a kid who also happens to have gender identity issues. It's incredibly obvious the kids are confused and being persuaded by the parents views on gender. Put that kid with two normal parents...a man and woman...or even just a normal gay couple who believes in male/female identities and I guarantee you she wouldn't even think twice about identifying as her biological sex/gender.

Children should be taught that as a boy or girl they can play with and like whatever they like, liking things associated with the opposite gender doesn't make them any less a boy or girl. That's how you raise a child comfortable in who they are.
They need to know and accept who they are before they can establish a stable identity.
This child is being set up for a collection of unstable and gender identity disorders.

Gender obsession is seriously out of hand here. My 4 year old nephew just showed my how he spells “potatoes” while asking why the sky is blue. Kids should be allowed to just be kids and not have to think about gender stuff. Yes there probably gonna ask questions and need answers but you shouldn’t be trying to educate them about that when their still figuring out what color they like. You may as well start teaching them which political part they vibe with or what religion they feel connected too. Smothering them in your personal beliefs will only serve to impair whatever personal thoughts they grow on the matter.
