New federal dietary guidelines released Tuesday ignore advice from the government's own scientific advisors who say the recommended limits for sugar and alcohol intake should be lower. Northwell Health Nutritionist and Program Director Sharon Zarabi joins CBS News correspondent Omar Villafranca with more on the updated guidelines and the new recommendations for mothers and babies.

the 5/2 diet works really well, for 5 days you eat regularly, trying to make good food decisions, and then for 2 days you limit your calorie intake to less than 500. it's amazing how much food you can have for under 500 calories for the whole day, you won't starve, but you will reduce your intake and your waistline.

I'm a little confused. So we are consuming about 13% of calories from sugar, the science says we should consume less than 6% and the new current guidelines are suggesting we should consume less than 10%?

I look at what the healthiest and longest lived people groups tend to eat. And what their activity level is like. And the advice in the usa always falls flat.

The guidelines do not encourage whole dairy: it has to be low fat or a fake vegan plant infusion. The body does not care if the sugar is "added" or not. If they grind down some fruit, it's the same fructose that goes to the liver.

As somebody who used to teach the basic dietitian course in the military it amazes me the way some of these dietitians talk. There are a number of factors that they do not think about such as the way the human body metabolizes the various foods such as if you eat potatoes everyday they don't just fall in your gut and sit there. They are metabolized into bingo sugar 🤯🤯. Since I'm a man I once had a doctor tell me when I weighed about 110 lb that I should be consuming no more than 2500 calories a day. When I got up to 160 lb guess what still got told I should be doing no more than 2500 calories a day even though I was 50 lb heavier. They also do not take into consideration the amount of physical activity one person does as opposed to another person. Should say a 200-pound person who walks consume the same amount of calories as a 200 lb person and a wheelchair. Use a little logic there to determine the answer. There are a lot of variables because no two bodies are alike yet a lot of healthcare professionals want to make it sound like they know everything and they don't because nobody does. I am in my 60s and still within 20 lb of what I weighed in my 30s because I know my body best and I know how to regulate my proteins carbohydrates starches on and on and on.
