This video is part of a new series of basic clinical skills videos.

It demonstrates how to assess a patient's pupils using a pen torch. This is useful in the emergency setting as it provides important diagnostic and prognostic information about a patient.

Both pupils should be the same size, shape and react equally to light and accommodation. The size and reactivity of the pupils can also help in determining if the patient is intoxicated, and if so with what substance.
