Checking Pupil Reaction [Quick Tip]

First responders often check pupil response in their patients during patient assessment. I give a quick tip for checking pupil reaction when you do not have a pen light.

Remember this acronym:  PERL =  Pupils Equal & Reactive to Light.  As SM said the pupils should be of equal size in both dilated and restricted conditions.  And, the rate of change while they are moving from one state to the other, in either/both directions should also be equal also.

Great tip. I work a lot of concerts as a professional sound / lighting operator and I frequently see overdoses or adverse reactions to drugs when I am working electronic music parties (DJ stuff). While there is almost always medical personnel on site that attends to the victims long before I am a first responder, I often fear I will be the only one around who can do anything.

Couple questions in that regard (note : yes I will be taking more thorough first aid training in the near future, but until then...) :

1) What should you do if you know the patient took a bunch of drugs and is twitching on the ground?

2) in the spirit of this current video (pupil dilation), what should we be looking for, and what should we do if pupils aren't reacting as per 'normal' ?
