Dr Janis Orr demonstrates how to test pupillary function. This video shows how to check direct, consensual and near responses, how to investigate anisocoria and how to check for a relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD).

Thanks for this great video. The graphical explanations are really useful. I do however have one suggestion for the Swinging flashlight test - stress the importance of moving the light from OD to OS rapidly, not "taking a detour under the nose" as the contralateral eye will then have the opportunity to dilate thus giving a false positive RAPD. Many students make this mistake and "find" an disproportional number of patients with "RAPD". A good example of the correct testing procedure can be seen here: (view from 2 min10 sec). This video also shows how to quantify the RAPD using neutral density filters.
