Should I use Lining paper before I put up a wallpaper?
Why do you use lining paper?

Let's talk about lining and why you should be doing it.

Do you know the reasons why you should line....????

Hi Phil, that was an enlightening video, particularly as I experienced one of the many issues you mentioned for not lining prior to hanging a finished paper.

I recently hung a finished paper onto a problematic surface- loose and flaky emulsion paint. I thought I’d done a good job with the preparation but an area of the wall had blistered, which could be clearly seen through the paper. Prior to this, I never saw the point in using lining paper if the wall was sound. However, In retrospect, If I had lined first I would have had the chance to correct the problem, as you pointed out. So, it’s lining paper first from now on 👍

I always line for all the reasons you have mentioned, on the cost front it’s usually a reasonably quick process and in the scheme of a job doesn’t add that much to get a far better finish that’s how I sell it to my customers, another good video phill, the better the quality and higher standards we produce equals a better reputation and a hourly or day rate

Hi Phil, great video as usual. One thing you mention using the tikkurilla optiva primer on the new plaster bits and watering it down for that. Does the optiva always need diluted for new plaster/plasterboard that is to be getting painted? I just bought a big tub of it for this purpose and it doesn't actually mention adding water.Dont want to do it wrong!!🙂

Hi Phil, if you were doing a dark paper over the lining would you also get a sample pot of paint made up of the wallpaper colour and do paint stripes over your lining so that the seams don't show or do you trust the seams won't shrink back? Thanks

Hi Phil, thanks for the video. Wondering if you could advise on this - we are in the process of having hall/stairs/landing decorated in our old house. The walls had anaglypta paper, which the decorater advised he would remove and then line all the walls prior to painting (we are not having wall paper.) After removing the anaglypta he found that there were areas that had the original wall paper that came with the house hidden underneath as well as patches of distempa. At this point he said not to worry, he will line over it all all and then sand and fill. We are now at the filling part of the process with it fully lined and i'm a little worried as there are bubbles starting show and imperfections. I get that the house is old, but there seems to have been an immense amount of filler used. Should I just trust the process, or is there something sounding incorrect here...?

Great video. Straight to the point but enough detail too. Question; do you bother sizing the lining paper before hanging wallpaper?

Phil can u help, can I hang lining paper, on top of previous analysts backing paper, which is on top of lining paper😮The anagylypta had to come of the ceiling but it’s left the backing paper and the lining paper and all solid.
Should I line it again before emulsion? Thanks

How much would you charge for cross lining a standard living room ? 12ft by 13ft with 2 doors n one window Phil

Couldn't you just fire a nice straight horizontal line on the wall ans cut off the excess at the roof joint like you would hanging your finish paper vertically?

Hi phil! Hoping yo get some advice please. My house is full of anaglypta. In the living room one wall is very hollow when i knock, someone told me not to remove the paper as this can reveal more issues behind the wall. Also, they said id need to take off coving etc?

Can i use lining paper over anaglypta and paint over or shall i remove anaglypta first then line?

A surface of even porosity and colour
But unfortunately people don’t want to pay for it even when advised

You wouldn’t get a gap if use a spirit level, horizontal line

well I think the most important question is how many customers will pay the extra from my experience not many. In my experience customers would want you to do for the same price as a competitor who gave them price with no lining. Your always fighting with the decision do you put the job above your living.
