Dealing with Challenging Behaviors:

__

In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.

I go back to my husbands care community every night so he can relax in his room before bed (He can’t be in his room alone as he forgets he can’t walk and would fall). It does get tiring for me but it helps him so much. Occasionally I don’t go in but then I feel sad too.

My mother does this every time I speak with her doesn't matter the time. She tells me she doesn't need home care, she can manage on her own, she cannot, that she doesn't want any one coming into her home that she refuses to pay for it. Despite 100s of pictures and videos of her living in squalid conditions she refuses to accept calling me mean wicked, I am demeaning, abusing her. She is vile.

Dr Natalie, your tips only work if you as the care giver wish to continue these mental gymnastics to try get your LO to do what they need to do. If you have already spent a lot of time battling them and you are just about ready to give up the fight and let them go then you have to do this. Let some one else care for them and take your strain otherwise they will destroy you. They will.

Can you make a part 2 with a few real life examples? / Love your content, btw. I’m already implementing tips I learned from you.

This makes a lot of sense but I am not sure if my mom displays this behaviour regularly at a certain time of day. I have also sat their wondering what is causing or triggering that behaviour and I have to be honest with such an intense caring routine and working on top of it I could very well be missing the clues.

My mom starts asking to go home as soon as she wakes up and does it all day long, so this doesn't help me unfortunately.

If you've been a mother and distracted your child away from whatever he or she has set their mind to doing or having then that's what works with dementia patients . My husband.

My Momma says She is going back home every night. I live with Her in Her home! There isn't a predictable time on it so I just tell her that I think She is getting tired and should go on to bed.

How do I get my husband to stop saying things are “lost” when they’re right in front of him?

I just watched your recent short on how wearing hearing aids can help a dementia patient. My husband has dementia and hearing aids but rarely wears them. Do you have any tips for encouraging the daily wearing of hearing aids? I don’t want to ‘nag’ but I know it would help him!
