MS Swaminathan - Father of India’s ‘Green Revolution #upsc #nextias

Dr. M. S. Swaminathan passed away at the age of 98. He was the key architect of India’s Green Revolution, which made India self-reliant in food production. He became Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Between 1982 and 1988, he headed the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines. He set up the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in Chennai. In 2004, he was appointed as chair of the National Commission on Farmers, which recommended that the minimum support price should be at least 50% more than the weighted average cost of production.
