Neuropathy, Nerve Pain and Social Security Disability

Chronic, intractable nerve pain or neuropathy can be so uncomfortable that getting through a work day will be impossible. Since Social Security defines disability in terms of how your medical problems prevent you from working, neuropathy can be a disabling condition.

As I discuss in this video, disability judges expect to see reports from specialists like neurologists, nerve condition study test results and prescriptions for strong nerve pain medications like neurontin.

SSD judges also look for causation - what is the source of your nerve pain - is it a disc problem, diabetes, a medication reaction or something else. If causation is clear you may be able to argue that listing 11.14 applies, although in most cases your attorney will present a functional capacity argument - that your nerve pain has so reduced your capacity for work that you would not be reliable at any job.

If your peripheral neuropathy cannot be controlled despite your doctor’s best efforts and your compliance with recommended treatment, then your chances at winning SSDI or SSI are good.

This guy is speaking the truth here. I caught for years to get my case won and this info he gives is exactly what it took to win it. Dont try and take on the SS office alone. You need an attorney and you need to lissen to that attorney. 100% thumbs up for this man. Wish I had him years ago. Before I lost my home trying to fight without one, attorneys.

I’m currently in the reconsideration process while also having progressing neuropathy and have been sending in reports to my legal rep as fast as I can get them. My main diagnosis is Ehlers danlos and my gene testing showed that my mutation is linked to CMT-type neuropathy as well as EDS, as it causes damage with connective tissue AND nerves. Im in the process where they haven’t given me specific nerve pain meds yet, but Ive have an abnormal nerve conduction study, am in splints a lot and been in PT for about a year straight for a number of issues. Thank you for these videos and info! They’ve helped me feel ready and confident to fight for my case!

It was hard to hear this since it is a big issue for my case as an issue with my diabetes. Still very helpful and useful knowledge. As always, thanks.

I was diagnosed with Charcot Marie Tooth Type 2A, or axional hereditary neuropathy in 2003.I am currently 56 y, 10 months old. I had EMG and NCV tests by 2 different doctors, the second being at University of Chicago through the MDA clinic. No treatment is offered except drugs for pain, which i tried and did not find helpful, and bracing. Began seeing new neurologist near my new place of residence in 2014 again through MDA. Both legs are affected and he told me I am currently disabled per SSDI definitions. Prescription for braces was filled with terrible results that had me lame for almost 2 years. I have continued to work in diminished capacity as a business owner in a very physically demanding job and will no tbe able to perform duties much longer. I have worked since this diagnosis to keep myself moving and be constructive. Neurologist said he does not hand out disability diagnosis very often, but is well known in the state offices that handle disability claims as someone that is very serious and only rarely rejected. Do i have shot?

2 years awaiting disability hearing. Today CIGNA offered me a buyout 5 months going forward and writing off over 30k they’ve paid me. Awaiting my lawyer’s response and my employer confirmed if I took the buyout I’d immediately be former employee and only have insurance for the remainder of the month. 8 days ago I had surgery postponed due to funds. I’d be without insurance and still be awaiting my disability hearing.

In 2015 I hurt my back at home and went to work the next day. No more than 5 minutes into the day, and my legs turned to jello, and I collapsed into a machine. I got up and tried again, but the same thing happened. I managed to get myself to the doctors. Nothing showed in any scans over the next five years as the same thing happened 4 more times. Eventually, I demanded an MRI. It showed a lateral tare in the l5 s1 and a reduction in the spine. Some time later, after several years complaining to doctors about leg pain, they sent me for a nerve test using electrical impulse. It showed parifreal neuropathy in both legs and feet. For the past few years, doctors have tried medications, but they cause seizures and saratonin syndrome. So I live with pain every day every night for every moment. I can hardly sleep. I've had symptoms of corporal tunnel since 2006, but the x-ray I just had shows nothing, they say.. .continuing to make appointments. I have sub clinical thyroid disease. I was diagnosed as a child with petite mall seizures, ADHD and had rocky mountain spotted fever. I TAKE NO MEDICATION, IVE been driving without incident all my life, and I'm 46 years old. I've worked my whole life, but I recently quit. My girlfriend is doing her best to pay the bills. Going to court is a scary thought. Going back to work and losing another job for attendance, also a scary thought or losing my license. I'm not really sure what to do. Any advice would be great. My name is William
