This is very real, this is because ants are very tiny and any smell is a really hard smell for them, markers have a smell and they are really hard for ants, so they don't want to cross the markerline, they can't jump. So it really is impossible for them to cross it.

Try to make a mini maze or mini track with multiple ants and see who exits 1st

The sharpie’s chemicals of the inks prevents the ants from stepping on it due to its scent, also the reason why they dont go out is because the line or circle you created is still wet.
