Note: This was all taken from my experiences in finding queen ants in North America, so flight requirements will be different in other regions, and for different species

Additional Info:
Drones, or male ants are commonly mistaken with queen ants, because of their similarities. You can usually tell a drone from a queen, by checking if they have a tiny head compared to their thorax. Their abdomen is also usually bean shaped, compared to the circular abdomens of queens.

Do not attempt the ‘Triangle, and Cradle Method’ when handling aggressive species. I was using one of my newly caught queens as an example for catching queens that are more relaxed. Doing this also may get you questionable looks if you are in a public area, such as a park.

You still have time to find queen ants if you have not found any yet! I hope this video helped, so good luck, and happy anting! :D

Once you find a few queens, you kinda develop an eye for them. (I've even been able to see a Formica queen in grass, from 4 or 5 feet away! However, they are decent sized ants so that makes it a bit more easy). Ant-keeping really makes your eyes good!!!

I found them mostly in the ground near big trees. I've once caught 2 queens, i didnt catch it bc i dont have tools. And then after weeks, 1 queen (fire ant) growed her colony, but 1 queen (carpenter) didnt make it because she was too busy on shedding her wings that she forgot to eat and drink and then ofc she died, rest in peace for that queen

1:33 Just for the people who don’t know, the queen ant is not humping the ground, it is simply trying to tear its wings off that will useless as she founds her colony

Love the brief summary regarding environmental conditions to catch queens; I have not seen this information listed on other "Catch a Queen" type videos.

To catch the queen, you can also put a larger container (that has a lid) directly over it (be very quick) and it will climb up the walls, then you close the lid, and transfer it to a tube

*uses triangle formation on an aggressive species* OWWW!

For the triangle method I used it on a fire ant queen. *THAT SURE WENT WELL*

Nice video! I was expecting it to be most of the same "go on a warm day after rain" advice that I already knew, but there are some really nice tips here. I'll have to keep those catching methods in mind; personally I've been using a wide piece of cardboard and brushing whatever I found into a cup for transport, then using the cardboard as a lid

Great video. Excellent information. A chart, all inclusive, of regions of the world, of the species in that region, when they have their nuptial flights; which months. Also detailing time when to look; night time, or day time. What environment they'll be in; such as in the high mountains, in the deserts, in the forest, etc. Location; such as they'll be trees, logs, or if they're ground dwelling, or both. Or a community chat, where people can post where they find a particular queen, & what region of the world. But in real time, so that others can go & search for queens in that location too.

In the last 3 days I’ve caught 3 different types of queens 1: camponotus sexugattus 2: what I think is a Caribbean crazy ant queen 3: solenopsis invicta

Oh my. The methods you showed for picking up the queens seems so much better than my strategy of hoping i dont crush the queen when i set a snap-vial over them XD

Great video
